I like turtles. (and mopars) Can we get back to making fun of my welds please?
Gee, and stop all the fun we've had all day long?? :D

Shoot, man...I can be a contender in that contest.
On Sunday, I ran out of MIG wire so I grabbed a roll that had some left to it. The welds fizzed and popped even worse than usual. I figured it was Flux Core instead of the copper solid stuff I now use.
The guy at the welding supply house confirmed it. The flux core wire is silver in color to identify it.
I really need to take a welding class or get some qualified person stand over me to show me what I am doing wrong.
Years back I watched a YouTube video of a guy buffing out the clearcoat on a car. Instantly I saw what I was doing wrong for years!
Never tried even though I've had flux core wire along with a machine with gas but have been told that using flux core with gas can make a good looking weld. Can't brag right now on mine because my last welding job looked like crap but I know there was good penetration. Just don't weld enough these days to keep in practice of doing a good weld and making it look good too.

My welds are far better than that. My trouble is with consistency. Right next to a great weld is one that looks like popcorn.
Sometimes the popcorn looking weld is due to dirty surfaces. If you want to pull out your hair, try TIG. Everything needs to be clean clean clean. You see the guys on TV doing decent looking TIG welds but what they don't show is the prep work. About the only thing that's more forgiving to dirty stuff is SMAW!

My stuff doesn't break but it doesn't always look good.

First time for me to strike up an arc was 1969. I've done a lot of welding and there were very few that I thought were really really nice but most of the time, the more you do, the better you get. Position has a lot to do with it too....at least for me it does. Welding round stuff has always been my Achilles heel but the more I do it, the better the welds look. The last rear end shortening job I just did looked like crap but I didn't grind it.

Pretty doesn't = strong.. just remember that 'till the day ya die! Fitment and cleanliness is key to any good weld... TIG or MIG. Dropping "dimes" doesn't guarantee a good time! 58 thou... have we drifted this thread far enough yet.. LOL

Better than the alternative.....?

Looks like machine made....but I've seen some of that done by hand but only in vids. We had one good welder at work but even he could make it look that perfect. He showed me some stuff when I got my MIG machine but we had both retired by the time I got my TIG machine.....
