I am on the hunt for a B Body. I just sold a property and got a small boat load of cash. While I'd like to stay married (so I am not spending all the dough) enough can fall off the back of the boat for me to buy a nice car.

My back is pretty much screwed so I will need to buy a "done" car, one that has been well sorted.

What I'd really like is a triple black 1968 Charger (let's call it a "Bullitt" car). I do not care at all about numbers matching. It has to have a manual transmission. 4 speed fine, 5 or 6 speed better. Proper suspension upgrades, disc brakes at all corners. A "documented" restoration with proper attention to replacement metal if it was required. A quality paint job is a must. I do not need a wild engine. A "stockish" 440 would be fine as I would like to keep wrenching on the car to an absolute minimum because of my bad back issue. Air conditioning is important to me. I really do not want a 1969 or 1970 Charger. To my eye, 1968 is the pick of the litter.

So the question is, can I buy a car like this for $75k max? And like I said, a 318 car with the upgrades is perfectly fine for me. I don't care if it is an R/T. I am patient and don't need to get this done overnight.

If this is not possible, then I plan to pursue a '66 or '67 Plymouth or Dodge. I would probably have bought that '66 Coronet 440 that turbine68rt wrote about in the Cars for Sale area a few days back. Or, perhaps (there are always exceptions), a 1969 Charger 500.

Your thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if u decide you want to venture out of b body's i have a 74 challenger forsale that is a turn key ride

I think you can sir. I've see them. I realize what you're looking for and that is a reasonable budget for a good driver. It will take some time and patience, and with the combined 10 millions years of expertise of the grumpy old farts on this forum ( meant with deep respect), one can get validation of numbers ect. I'll keep an eye out. In case you get board, I still have a bud selling a 66 Hemi Satellite for a lot less than that.

Your budget is good, IF you can find that car.

There are members here that put their cars up for sale every now and then because they simply can't enjoy
them or take care of them anymore. The other option is to go to a Mecum auction when they come around.
Whatever you do, don't be in too much of a hurry, because if you do a knee-jerk and buy something in a hurry,
you'll find your dream car a week after! Try looking through Hemmings for a nice car. They attract alot of quality
vehicles. Good luck with the hunt!

It's doable IMO

the specific color or trans combo may be the hardest part of it

you may be able to find something close, have to do a little changes

good luck with your "Bullitt" Charger quest

I was just on http://www.autabuy.com & the 1st car shown
in a generic 1968 Charger search was a 'Black 68 Charger R/T'
it's an auto for $69,900 fresh build
there was a 68 383 car Black non R/T auto console again for $39,999
another for $59,999 & another for $49,999 in Black
various fresh builds (some are non R/T's)

sorry didn't save the links, go to the above site
& inter 1968 Charger in the generic search

good luck

I did it with my GTX. Like you, I had colors and options it had to have, and that did make it tough. In my experience, the biggest hurdle with the really nice cars is current owners have put enough into them in blood, sweat, and tears, that they are kept till the bitter end. And that could be in terms of restoration, or search effort, or combinations of above. My car was from a private seller in Hemmings.

When I responded to the ad, my first question was why would a living owner put such a nice example on the market. Turned out the seller had experienced a deep personal loss years before that had provided motivation to buy and restore the car. He donated every penny of the sale to charity. The car far exceeded my expectations when I flew out to inspect it. Didn't expect it to really be a numbers matching A33 car, but it was.

As stated above, Mecum can be an option, with premium cars coming up as a result of estate sales. I think you can find exactly what you're after, it just might take a while. The fact you aren't tied to the numbers matching deal should help a lot. Good luck with the search.

I definitely think you can. I sold my 69 quad black R/T Charger 4-speed nom a couple of years ago for 75k. I kept the wheels and tires, but everything else was new. I figured that was real strong money for the car.

Is that 75K U.S. or, as they like to call it, "funny money" ???

Yes, I will pay $75k US. That's around $100,000 these days in Canadian cash, plus another $13,000 for sales tax. Not chump change for sure. Probably another $30k would get you into a Demon.

I've shot that seller a message. Nice looking car! Thanks a lot.

But NO A/C! Anyone know what that would realistically cost to install air conditioning, given that I plan to do NOTHING?

Thanks everyone for your comments.

p.s. I might buy a '67 or '67 TOO.
I don't think I would mess with a numbers matching 1 of 129 made car. Those 383 Magnums run damn good. I had one in a 70 Challenger R/T 4 speed.

I know I would be able to find one for 75k,good luck and cant wait to see some pics.

There was a '68 Charger listed on eBay a few weeks back. Original 383 2barrell car w/air all redone. Gorgeous car. I believe it sold for 40 or 42k. However, it was Silver. I don't think you will have to spend the amount your thinking as long as you are patient.

So this guy is "American Classic Muscle Cars":

http://www.truemusclecars.com/

The cars are actually in Chicago (Lake Villa, IL - 50 miles north of Chicago near the Wisconsin border). As near as I can see what they do is sell Chargers. Has anyone here dealt with them?

I'm going to pass on the one set out in the listing above. They took the car as a trade and know little about the car or the engine. And you look through the photos and it's rougher than one would think. AND I really want air conditioning!

Thanks for your help. The hunt continues.
