Home carpet cleaning.

In the future consider a central vac, ours is pretty impressive!

The more water you pour on the carpet the more it soaks into the underpad and the floor underneath. The underpad and floor will take so long to dry it will start stinking or have a musty smell. Any stains in the underpad will start smelling again with the added moisture. I see a new carpet in your near future.
You are absolutely right.
Today the Wife and I went to a Non-Corporate Carpet store to see what kind of $$$ we are facing to replace the carpet in 2 rooms.
I was torn between buying something CHEAP since we plan to move in the future and something nice so it doesn't look like rental grade carpet to prospective buyers.
Just to compare, we went to Home Depot. I can't believe the vast difference in price and quality of carpet. The cheapest I saw was .65 cents per square foot. The stuff we liked at the Carpet store was at $2.99 on sale at 30% off. The cheap stuff was so bad, I couldn't even imagine putting it in a dog house.
So, replacement it will be. For the last months or years that we are in thus house, we will have nice carpet.

Don't buy colors you like, buy colors that will sell.

I had a carpet cleaned 6 years ago professionally.. This guy had a carpet cleaner that was like NOTHING I had seen before.. It had a large buffing type of wheel with little metal fingers that lifted up the carpet while it cleaned the carpet.. Looked like brand new again

This'll get the job done.

I like carpet in certain areas of my house. Unfortunately the trend is no carpet. According to the numerous home shows we watch they all ditch the carpet in favor of hardwood or laminate of some sort and accent with area rugs. I proposed to my girlfriend that we eventually replace the carpets with hardwood, which I have in most of my house, and she balked at the idea. So no matter what kind of carpet you replace it with the next owners will most likely remove it. Enjoy your house while you are in it.
Funny thing...My ol' lady says...if carpet replacement costs $2000, I will shutter at that price. If a new EFI setup or upgrade for my car costs $2000, I never have a problem and quick to buy it.:rolleyes:

This place I live in is the first house I have used laminate plank floor instead of hardwood, the whole house. It's a 100 percent waterproof and has a 10 year commercial warranty and life time residential warranty. Not cheap but the installation is a breeze and It's the last floor this house will ever see. My next one will have the same floor.

Just a tip for ya Kern but maybe you already know this...No street shoes of any kind are warn in my home. They come off in the Mud/Laundry room and then house shoes or moccasins or slippers, even flip flops are worn. Even bare foot or in socks. That way it keeps the dirt and staining down for when I have to spot clean or a more thorough cleaning with a service or by myself. Got in the habit when I was in Japan and it kinda stuck. Just a suggestion is all, and if you already practice it then good on you...cr8crshr/Bill:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::usflag::usflag::usflag:

The absolute best way to clean carpet is to rip it out and go with laminate flooring. It keeps the house cooler, looks really nice, easy to install and up keep is super easy.

I don't take my shoes off at all unless they are muddy or if I am going to not need them again for the night. I often come in and go back out several times a day and don't care to play that shoe shuffle game. Given that, I am the guy that will be dealing with more frequent cleaning and replacement.

OK then...I guess that answers it Kern and to each there own as well. Good Luck with the carpet install...cr8crshr/Bill:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::usflag::usflag::usflag:

much better to forget about carpets and switch to parquet

Quick way to solve your problem when budget and speed is essential.Bare with me you’ll be glad you did. This will take a weekend to do. 1st move all the furniture out on Friday, take a pair of pliers go to a corner grab some yarn and pull , this will pull the carpet up off of the tack strip, once the carpet is removed take a small crowbar and remove tack strip then remove padding . Take a flat straight hoe and remove all padding staples. Sweep or vacuum floor. Now you are ready
for luxury vinyl plank.Chalk a control line to run down glue right over the chalk line as the glue drys the line will show through don’t worry your line will still be the . Once you install your beautiful new floor , trim out with 1/4 round and reinstall furniture. Ez clean up if the pets have a accident. In the car hobby you have to remember a happy wife makes for a happy life. Tada it’s done. If lived closer to you I would help you. I have installed flooring for 40 year’s see why I said bare with me. Your carpenter skills will really pay off here .

The only problem with glueing vinyl plank flooring is it will show all unevenness, especially on a concrete floor. Pergo is awesome, but is time consuming to install. Another way to go if your building, is to have stain added to the mix.

high end carpet will last 20 years ....budget carpet is good for 10 years tops if your a neat freek...you get what you pay for...or over pay for..

If your carpet lasted from 2004, you're lucky.

I bought my house in 2004 as well.

It had the original 1985 "dusty rose" carpet.

It was in decent shape (if you're counting that's about 18 years).

In 2010, it was starting to show a little wear, and we replaced the living areas with a more neutral "Tiki Hut" color.

That carpet is now worn out in the high traffic areas.

1985 carpet lasted 24 years, 2010 carpet- 10 years.

The carpet in our place was probably replaced awhile before we bought in 2004. It had led a rough life too.
I have worked in construction all of my life, bringing home dust, dirt, sawdust and whatever stuck in my boots or shoes. I am a gearhead that gets greasy, I'm a home improvement dude and the back yard is a mix of grass and decomposed granite. It gets dusty here. WE have always had at least 3 dogs so there is the dirt and the hair from them too.
I was just surprised to see the stains grow so large after cleaning. I was pissed that the carpet looked great while cleaning but returned like some terrible cancer growth the next morning.

I can relate, it's true for many things, not only carpets. Sadly, stuff isn't made to be durable anymore. It's weird when you think about carpets that last that long, but when you really think about it, the ones that my parents have, are also that old. I have no time to do the carpet cleaning myself, and the guys that do it didn't care that much to keep them new. At least the company that cleans my carpets cleans them really well. I can't stand dirty things in my house, and everything has to be spotless. When you have no time to do it yourself, you have to hire someone to do it.

I have hardwood in my rentals, and in my own home. I always have dogs (currently, 2), and like the OP, I'm always somehow-dirty - garage, yard work, construction work, whatever. Best money I've spent in the last 5 years was when I was renovating a rental - it had old flooring that needed covering/re-doing, and I found a guy on Craigslist who had listed about 500 SF of pre-finished hardwood, brand new. Turns out he was a carpenter and was moving out west, and didn't want to schlep the materials. While I was picking up the wood, he asked how I was going to install it. I said I'd rent a nailer. For $50, he sold me his air nailer.

WHAT A GODSEND!!!

Hook it to a compressor, wedge it against the board you're placing, whack the pad with a mallet, and BAM, the board is tacked in place. One fastener every couple of feet, and the pad is angled so you're both fastening it down, and pressing it sideways tight against the board next to it.

I no longer do anything with carpet. Throw-rugs and area rugs, and that's it. Hardwood wears like iron (especially with tenants!). The only other flooring surface I work with is ceramic tile - also very easy to install, you can put heat grids under it now (she'll love that!), and it also wears like iron.

I also have the habit of taking 3 steps through the door into my mud room...and off go the shoes. Helps cut down on some of the dirt tracks - but the dogs refuse to cooperate!
