After searching, I didn’t find a thread with an in depth discussion on Argent Silver Rallye wheel paint. I’m looking for a paint that best matches the factory color.

I’m also wondering if there is a formula for Argent Silver that paint shops could mix up to spray with an automotive spray gun?

I see Eastwood sells shaker can Rallye Wheel/Argent Silver paint. And I found a Mopar Performance shaker can P4529876 Argent Silver.

What have you guys actually used on your Rallye wheels? Has anyone on here painted their wheels with a spray gun instead of a shaker can?

I painted a set of 15 x 7 steel wheels, years ago. I recall priming them with a shaker can and then painting them GB5 blue with a spray gun and compressor.

You know that "Argent" Silver just means Silver in French and again in English. Silver silver. If you are talking about Textured Argent, another story.
The color of the primer affects the color of the silver painted over it. So black primer with give a darker shade of Silver and so on.
The center caps were different shades for different years.
Several companies.

I have always used Krylon dull aluminum and clear coated them with great results.

I used the Mopar paint on my 70 Duster wheels and they matched pretty damn close if not spot on on my 2 original 14" wheels. I do know the summit or wheel vintiques are powder coated and are too dark the way they come. I still don't know why they wouldn't spend the time to get the color right if they are going to mass produce and powder coat them. But then again that's how it is with most reproduction stuff.....85-95% correct.

SEM makes a Lt Argent rattle can. I tested it over a light gray primer (like MoparLeo says about primer colors) and it turned out damn close. The local auto paint store said they can mix a quart of it. I'm guessing your local auto paint store can as well.

It looks like all responders so far have used rattle can paint. I searched the SEM website and could not find any product listed as Lt Argent, Light Argent or just Argent.

I'll contact Space Age Auto Paint Store. The paint store that had the 71 Charger funny car body hanging on the wall, this past spring. Will see if they carry any of these Argent paints, or can mix up anything close to it. I may not have time to mail order any paint, especially if they tell me it's back ordered..

Some of my Rallye wheels may have the original paint still on them. So I can compare with them.

Once you get the color you want I would definitely get it mixed into a single stage epoxy and spray it with a gun and compressor. The rattle can stuff is nothing like as durable, you can't get the film thickness due to the solvents needed to transfer the paint.

My mistake. The paint is not SEM rather PPG code 8568 - silver gray. After a little research (yesterday) seems this is a Ford or GM color. However, matched okay on my wheels. Only thing is my wheels had some miles on them so who knows what the original color looked like. Sorry for the misinformation.

If you want something better than rattle can, I have also used Badalson’s Rallye wheel paint and the results were excellent.

Thanks for the link, but I think that’s a bit overkill. That paint is $185 for a quart. That’s more than I paid for three of my Rallye wheels. If I had a Hemi Super Bee and was refinishing vintage 15x7 Rallye wheels then that paint would be appropriate.

True, but I believe you can buy it in pints too, just call Frank for pricing. You really don’t need that much paint since only the wheel face got sprayed. They use PPG Shop-Line products for that paint.

I went high end on one set of Rallyes and used the MP Spray cans on another set. Both sets were epoxy primed and shot with a good quality semi-gloss black paint. Tough to tell the difference and I’m not concerned about either one holding up.

I’ve located a store in Phoenix called Automotive Refinish Supply. They are a PPG Platinum Distributor. They should be able to get me the correct paint if I know the proper code number.

Using a paint cross reference site, the only Mopar “Argent” paint codes I was able to find are:

Ditzler PPG 8933 medium (light) argent. 1973 Plymouth - lower deck panel and tail lamp bezel

Ditzler PPG DX8555 Argent Silver. 1965 Plymouth - stone shield

I don’t know if I’ll be able to get any mail order paint in a timely manner, that includes the Roger Gibson source. Won’t be able to check till Monday. I know last spring and early summer, I was unable to obtain street hemi orange engine paint. I was going to try to repaint my valve covers and air cleaner lid..

I may need to just get some paint that looks somewhat close, as I am in a race against the oncoming high temps to get this car in a drivable state (beyond just making nearby laps around the neighborhood) before the extreme heat begins.

I still need to replace the ring and pinion and differential in the rear end. I’ve wasted too much time on wheels/tires. Part of that was holding out, waiting and hoping for 15x7 Rallye which aren’t going to happen anytime soon.

I’ve seen this mentioned elsewhere. Krylon 1403 Dull Aluminum. I’m intending these 14” Rallye to be a temporary solution until I can get repro 15x7 Rallye. It looks like I should be able to get this Krylon paint immediately, if I can’t get anything better local.

What clearcoat did you use with this paint? A Krylon clear? What did you use as a primer?

Here is a thread that discusses this topic and mentions more details on the Krylon solution. Also a PPG 3960 Silver Poly is mentioned as the “correct” paint. Though his painted wheel photo looks to be a bit different than what I believe to be the original paint on some of my wheels. His photo reminds me of the repro powder coated Rallye in tone.

Rustoleum Crystal clear enamel works well.

I see the Krylon Dull Aluminum is a metallic paint. The existing paint on the wheels on my car and the junkyard wheels don’t look metallic. I can’t see any metallic particles in them..

The first pic is a wheel on my car. The second pic is of a junkyard wheel.
