helping a friend with his Jeep build, it's an older CJ with a fiberglass tub, and someone made a mess of the wiring. anyway........

simple question, it's been a while: on the starter relay, which is a Mopar relay like the ones in our B's. The "I" terminal gets 12 volts from the ignition switch to trigger the relay and starter, correct? ..... I need to find the wire sending 12 volts with the key in the crank position? thanks!

and does the ground run through the neutral safety switch?

The two big terminals are a no brainier. One to the battery and one to the starter. The small terminals S is 12 volt keyed. I sends 12 volts or battery voltage to the coil for a hotter spark when the solenoid is energized in the cranking mode. The relay needs to be grounded.

the one he has looks like this...... the 2 brass color terminals are "I" and "G"...no "S"...... middle one is heavy guage (10?) to the starter

maybe it isn't the same as ours?

The two spade terminals should be marked. Ignition and ground.

yes they are......and its a 318...... someone's abandoned project..... I suppose I'm not even sure if it's the correct relay, it's a bit of a clusterphuck

If it is a mopar 318 and a mopar starter that relay can work. What transmission?

Thanks......it's an auto....904 I suppose?

I cannot find a hot wire during "crank" mode on the ign switch, but it was late and didn't get too much further into it

Reason I asked is you will have to have a neutral safety switch to complete the ground for the relay. As far as a keyed 12 volt wire its anyone's guess as it is not much Jeep anymore.

Terminal #1 - Ground or to the NSS
Terminal #2 - Ignition source
Terminal #3 - Supply to Starter Solenoid
Terminal #4 - Main power in from battery/to dash via fused link etc

(Variations on that exist)

"ignition source" ........ you mean 12 volts from the ignition switch in the "crank" position, correct?

Yes, that's correct. The reason that #1 is usually Ground/NSS, is because it is parallel to the outer face of the relay case, and there is usually a molded plug that fits snugly over the edge of the case to secure the positioning.

#3 should have a fork terminal - or can be a ring terminal....just don't lose the washer('U' clamp) and screw if removing for a ring terminal. :)

got it working....... thanks fellas, cleaning up someone else's mess is worse than starting from scratch
