I've been fascinated watching schools of fish and flocks of birds (for examples) acting together and wondered how individuals in mass can connect and act in harmony.

I would say that Newtons 3rd law applies here.

Newton's third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Because the metronomes are on a floating surface (a surface moving on cans), they will eventually equal out so that the forces are equal in each direction. I would assert that had they been on a solid, non-moving surface (desk, or floor), that they would not have synchronized, could be wrong, but that is my feeling.

What I find cool in this simple video is a way to see visually how actions and reactions work in real-time.
Similar physics principles apply to sound vibrations. -Noise-canceling headphones come to mind.-
Nicola Tesla -once made a test dealing with -accelerating harmonics -(gaining momentum) on a building structure and was stopped short of the building collapse.
