Mike Rowe Interview

I had hoped to find a young person to mentor and teach my trade as a carpenter, cabinetmaker, etc, but didn't happen. ruffcut

I was fortunate to have a wonderful mentor early on in my career. I'd love to be able to pass on my skills and experience, but to no avail! 440'

I've got a granddaughter who's 2 and a 6 month grandson. Will be a few yrs till I start teaching again.

I paint for the government, been there for about 21 years.
When I first started they would give me three or four summer students, and we freakin’ rocked! Male or female, I had equal quantities of both. Two in particular were outstanding, and I had them both for four summers. I would tell every one on the first day that if they wanted to learn that I would take the time to teach them. And they did, and I did. But for some reason, somewhere around 2007-2008 it started falling apart. Poor work ethics. Poor habits. Disrespect. Entitlement. Several years ago it got so bad that I fired one, a taboo thing when you work for the government. I literally told her to get in the van and get the **** out of here. My job survived the subsequent **** storm, but barely.
I don’t know what it is. I mean, my generation was similar in some ways, but different.
We always faced the possibility of being punched in the face if we were too idiotic. The current generation seems to encourage idiocy. And I think the whole attitude of “everyone gets an award for showing up” and “nobody fails” is doing our society a great disservice.
I refuse to take ANY summer students anymore. I don’t have the patience to nurse them through the work day.

I see things don't change from country to country.

Mike is one of the most grounded people out there right now, chock-FULL of common sense. Huge respect for that man, and for his attitude about work ethic and "drive to succeed". I sent that link to a friend's 20 year old daughter who is currently in the "what do I want to do" debate with herself. Military. School. Sports. First responder. She's a bright kid, athletic as hell, great with her hands, great brain, excellent problem solver...and I don't want to see her shoehorned into college "because".

I love Chloe's welding hood. "Arc Angel". Awesome!
