Hello. We have a 70 Charger in the family an XH29G car that someone had began to slowly clone into an R/T many years ago. According the 70 Charger Registry the car is somewhat of an oddball. The original color was B5 Blue with a B5 Blue Bench interior. The odd options on this car are the V1G top (long gone) and the R22 Radio. Also missing is the 3 speed wipers now converted to the the 2 speed wipers. The other change is that the car has been painted Petty Blue with the R/T scoops and tail panel added along with a 75 440 installed.

I'm just wondering if I should install of these options back? I did think about the vinyl top and 3 speed wipers but, not sure of the top especially with the color. I'm undecided on the radio but, the prior owner did give us a 70 radio (has knobs instead of thumbwheel) so I'm just wondering? The main purpose of the car would be a cruiser/weekend driver car?

Can you post up a pic of the fender tag? I can't imagine anyone would have ordered a blue car with a green vinyl top, but never say never with Mopar options.

Sorry, I should of clarified it was the Gator Grain top and black in color.

Well, that's not as rare as a green one on a blue car. I sold a 69 Charger R/T a couple years ago that came with a gator grain top.

Here's the fender tag.

Here's the car in it's current state. The family member purchased it like this many years other than the wheels and tires which I installed on it some time ago. I've been slowly doing some work to it. It had a electrical fire in the dash (minor) and the prior owners kind of hacked the car in other areas so I've been slowly trying to reverse that so I'll be asking more questions as I'm learning here.

Well J25, R22 and V1G were optional and it also had H51 A/C, and L31 hood turn signal indicators. Tell me this, after the code A73 it looks like B51 which is power disc brakes. Somebody ordered these options on the car.

What should you do now? Whatever you want to. It would be neat to see it original, but do you have the money to spend on it to get it there?

The 1970 gator grain tops were a dark brown when new and turned to black in the weather.

Yes, B51 is on there as well. I'm pretty sure someone used this as a parts car potentially as it is also missing the original front door panels (has Satellite/Road Runner door panels now), trunk light, and the hood turn signal indicators. I just installed a set of hood signals and now trying to get those to work. The other thing it has and I don't have a build sheet is the woodgrain wheel.

As far as going back to original, the plan now is get it driving for now so that's where my focus will go first. I'm uncertain on the color but, I don't mind it because it is different. I've thought to myself it doesn't matter at this point since it is a clone car and we don't do car shows. Just drive and enjoy when possible.

Do you cover the license plate when you go out for a drive?

Unless you're going to put the original 318 back in the car, originality is long gone. Do what you want with the car.
My red '70 is an XP model that was built with a 318. I changed the color, the entire drive train, interior color, brakes, all to suit my own tastes. On an XH car, most changes usually don't negatively affect the value since they were the lower priced model of the 1970 Charger.

Oh, I'm keeping the 440 in it even with it being pretty much bone stock other than the HP manifolds at the moment. The only things I've mainly debated as I said is the radio, wipers, and vinyl top. The radio would be mainly for looks anyways, as I would use a Bluetooth Speaker and phone for music when I wanted to listen to it. I'm not sure if there would be a benefit to 3 speed wipers vs the 2 speed though?

"I'm not sure if there would be a benefit to 3 speed wipers vs the 2 speed."

Only if you drive in heavy rain a lot. Mine rarely ever sees the rain.

I don't drive it in the rain. The only time it might see rain is when we do have the occasional surprise shower or rain storm.

Mine started as this:

Originality didn't matter to me with this car.

There are many posts on this site on yea or nea on a vinyl top. We have folks in both camps, love them and hate them. As K said, it s YOUR car to do as you prefer. I am in the camp that likes vinyl tops IF they were originally installed. Now to clarify, if I have a car that some PO has stripped of its vinyl trim, welded up the holes before repaint, I leave it that way. But if its there, it goes back.....just what works for me.

You can get a retrosound radio so it looks like an original but has Bluetooth,USB and other options. They aren't exactly cheap but not too bad. Here is the link for it.

I'm not a 70 charger super guru.. but I thought there was some built with bench seats that didn't come with upper door panel pads.
I thought that was weird..

Kern Dog I like your car in it's current state. I don't mind the green but, like flashier colors better. I have to admit I'm jealous you got two of them.

Thank you. The holes aren't there now, not even for the Charger emblems. I stumbled across the 70 Charger Registry a while back and according to their registry this car is 1 of 356 for the vinyl top option and about the same number for the radio as well. I realize rarity doesn't equal desirability. I've had a couple of other oddball vehicles over the years as well.
