Propane Torch?

That's a new tool for me. I see there are affordable options out there. I may indeed go that way. I'm certainly not looking forward to more scraping!

Goo-Gone Automotive Spray Gell removes undercoat no problem.
Spray on, walk away, come back in 24 hrs.
Scrapes off with ease.

It might look like it dried up during the wait time, spray some more if you like, but most likely it just soaked in.

There are 2 auto sprays, make sure it's the Automotive Spray Gell.

I've been working with the BZ8250HT for a while. It did fine on the short green propane tank, but the local hardware store couldn't keep those in stock so I tried the tall blue tank. I have not been able to light the torch off of the tall blue tank, and boy have I tried! Is there a reason for that?

Also, I've not been able to get the trigger lock to disengage until the valve has been shut and the pressure has come off the line. Is that normal?

I had problems with the tall tanks not working.Like everything else now a days.Poor quality.
Also not getting the Colman green tanks. Locally the were out of stock for awhile. Can't say about the trigger lock.
Just more aggravation in this wonderful hobby.

Good grief. I guess I'll pick up the basic torch kit at Ace and see if that will work with the tall blue tanks.

I picked up a "Made in the USA" striker and lit the BZ8250HT on the first go. I think the BZ8250HT's internal striker fell off. I can't hear it rattling around in there, but it doesn't feel like it's there when I pull the trigger. The trigger is also stuck in the "on" position now. It isn't popping the lock loose anymore. It had trouble popping the lock loose from the beginning. Wish I'd forked out the extra $'s for the McMaster-Carr torch now.

Edit - after disconnecting the BZ8250HT from the bottle and letting it sit for a while, the trigger unstuck itself and works like normal. Is there something that keeps the trigger from unlocking? Like, it won't unlock until the torch cools down?

if the gas flow is high the valve may be freezing up when used for an extended period!

That could be it. I've been using this technique to rust proof my old hardware -

I cranked the gas all the way up for the shackle bolts, and it took a while to do the job. Also, I don't really know what I'm doing with a torch anyway.

This stuff is hard as a rock now. I used my air chisel last year on the 68 Charger. easiest time ever doing that ugly job. I've used a hammer and wood chisel too, way less cleanup than the torch method.

Check before you buy to see if it will use both gasses.

It does. I've had it for a while and it was great when I ran it off the little squat green bottle of propane. I haven't been able to light it off the tall skinny bottle without using a separate striker.

Thanks for the advice! I've been using the Goo Gone Pro Power to clean up the last of the undercoating. I had doubts about Goo Gone's ability to remove undercoating but I wish I'd used it from the start now. It's far better than trying to use a torch. The torch is still good for checking my work (makes the undercoating light up a bit) and pulling oils out of the metal. I feel like I've got a good handle on this job now, but that doesn't mean I want to do it again!

Update on the BernzOmatic - now that the weather is warm, the torch ignites just fine again. I'm pretty fortunate not to have set myself on fire discovering that, because I sure wasn't expecting it to light. But it's good to know the internal striker didn't break off like I thought it did.
