I'm no expert here and stage3 will no doubt know better but the only reservation I understood with s/rollers on the street was if in traffic don't idle it too low, too long which is obvious really, you need the pressure/volume.
With that much street use Bio I personally would go solid flat tappet, you may lose 20hp?....I have never been a fan of hydraulics for anything@the track thats gonna get to or exceed 6500rpm. I think you need to think about your weight, you'll know the hp from the dyno?, then figure your gearing/tyre size it'll give you an idea of top end rpm@the stripe on track and then add some for N20 and then figure if hyd rollers are gonna cope. Here's a scenario>
Weight 3800lb?
hp 750?, cam/CR dependent but not that much
29"tyre?
4.10 gear?
60 Foot E.T. : 1.39 Seconds
1/8 Mile E.T. : 6.31 Seconds
1/8 Mile Trap Speed : 107.68 MPH
1/4 Mile E.T. : 10.00 Seconds
1/4 Mile Trap Speed : 134 MPH
1/4 Mile Trap RPM : 6,367 RPM + N20
so 6500+@the stripe in theory with a small shot and when you get brave with the jets it could be approaching 7k, to me thats not hyd territory and also with a stick its easier to over rev with different scenario's happening, street only perhaps street/strip err no.....just some thoughts.
When you put it that way...mapping it out so to speak.
I would be even more upset if I ignored "a famous engine builder" and my own instinct, which doesn't compare, but I'd be perpetually SMH.

agree,,,the rollers i used up to this point have been crane and comp, never had a problem, on this build i have a set of isky ES rollers , bushed No needle bearings pressurized. :thumbsup:

ray barton told me that when he was building crate motors for chrysler, he went thru over 400 sets of hydralic lifters to get 300 sets useable at the time my engine was dropping pushrods upon start up . made in China. he said the only way to be sure its fixed is to use solid lifters, so i use the best i can find,,isky EZ rollers ! good enough for him good enough for me.
 
solid flat tappet is fine . My curent 505 runs the Satellite into 10.20s . Daily drive it . Drove to Portland Victoria to race last month, 15 hrs each way plus 17 1/8 mile passes(test and racing). Runner up and top qualify . Raced last weekend local 1 hour away, 6 1/4 mile passes . Win and #3 qualify . Racing again on 11/12 Feb . Plenty of power , easy maintenance .

How did you like your Scat kit? I retired from there. Gonna put one in my 440. I miss that job. They are a partner with Air Flow Research now. Since I heard that Callie’s is gonna make a 440 block then AFR just might tool up for some RB heads. I would like that.
yep,,my lowly 446 , 1971 block with 440 source steel main caps with studs and scat rotating assembly will be pushing it but its mostly street driven, been using .650 lift rollers on the street for years...the plan was using the crossram as the cork to keep power levels in check but modern tech, ya gotta love it...common thinking is dont go over 750 HP on an older block. like u say, shift it at 6000 and should live forever. while making 700 HP...i'll take some of that.
 
Just to give you an insight into SFT cams, my old 446ci all iron 9.7-ish:1CR six-pack bottom end 906 (260cfm) headed motor with a single 850DP and the old Mcandless .650/.650 [email protected] sft cam made 529fwhp on track back in 1990, and 464hp with stock 906's. It ticked over@900rpm, pulled strong to 7k and I didn't think it was that wild. Set the lash once with HS r/rockers and never touched it again.
Not relevant really for your combo but there it is for some info thats all.

I feel the need to apologize, but even moreso express my gratitude.
First, I didn't mean to hijack a great thread I have extreme enthusiasm for. As I posted, any and every time I see old school MOPAR engineering do a good job of performance even compared to modern components, or even better, when enhanced or combined with modern design, it makes me especially happy to have been a lifelong MOPAR enthusiast..
The modded cross ram intake on the engine featured is fantastic, and the performance is something that would make me very happy, albeit with a lower CR.
The main reason for this post is I got off on a (another) "lifter" Q&A and I have been through this with y'all before, and your replies were so informative.
I'm still tormented by this, I don't want to come across as difficult or contrary to my builder, but some kind of solid lifter sure seems to be the "safer" choice. The flip side is with an aluminum block and heads, lash adjustments can be challenging, I've never made lash adjustments, ever, in my 60 years, and hydraulic rollers sure appeal to my desire to keep me out from under the hood. OTOH, if I have a valvetrain failure because of going hydraulic, I'm going to be down on myself for whatever the consequences are, knowing I should have gone the solid lifter route.
Lastly, Jim Laroy is my friend and I consider many of you to be as well, and Jim and some of you have SO MUCH experience, but then so does my builder.
I guess it is going to come down to me asking him to set me up with solid lifters, and if he insists that hydraulic rollers is the better choice I'm going to give in and let him use them.
We will know as I assume that will be the next big chunk of money I spend in putting the 572 together.

So...
After reaching for my phone more than once today to call or text or email my builder, I finally broke down and called him to tell/ask him that I wanted some kind of solid lifter I can live with in stop and go traffic and the other kinds of driving/use I'm going to do.
I have to remind myself that there's a reason why I trust this guy!
So bottom line is solid roller it is, details to come when we are ready to cross that bridge.

My little 496 w a relatively mild, no lope, hydraulic roller cam, 10.2:1 w aluminum heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane intake made 610/670 hp/tq at the crank. HP came in at 5,200rpm. So a "built" 511", should be pretty easy to get 700.
which aluminum heads r u running to get that number ?
 
I have their bushing lifters in my hemi.
You are one of a number of forum members who I pay particular attention to your posts. I will mention BAM and them being in Florida to my builder who probably already knows.
 
recieved my TF 270's this week ! mocked it up ready to measure for pushrods. basicly the same motor as tested. almost,,446 with a CC solid roller with 1.6 T&D rockers, gives it .667 total lift less lash and 266 and 272 @.050. A&A crossram with avs2 carbs. 10.7-1..have to make up a custom pushrod checker. rocker arm geometry was set up by B3 racing engines :thumbsup:

Those X-Ram intakes sure look fine, and apparently A&A did a great job of hogging out the one in the first post.
Do they "come" modded or are they copies of the factory X-Ram and they have porting services as an option?
That mill looks FINE!
I'm jealous..who did the TF270s come from and how long did you wait? I'm being told none available anywhere...
