Stuck pinion gear

Hi guys, I cannot for the life of me get the pinion out of my 8 3/4 489 case (29 spline). I’ve tried pressing it out, hammer, air hammer…

any tips?

Have you tried heat and the press? Just an idea.

29 splines can be allot tougher than the 10 spline yokes... I'd try a two bolt puller on the yoke first, then press the pinion out separately....

i got the yoke off without too much of a problem. It seems as though the pinion bearing and pinion are fused. Can’t seem to push or hammer it out. I put some penetrating fluid on for over night. Will send pics of where things are at for more ideas.

Heat the inner bearing race and hammer it out. You do have a O.A. torch?

Both bearing cones and cups are interference fit on the shaft and in the housing, right?
Looking at the factory manual they should be press fit but probably not really tight.
Some heat on those inner bearing races should be helping indeed, though be fast to avoid heating the pinion shaft too much as that will expand also, which you don't want.

Thanks guys. I only have a propane torch, that didn't get it hot enough. It's still stuck this morning. My press won't push it out as is. Going to "phone a friend" with an oxy acetylene torch and try that. More to follow

I've had to cut the front pinion out with oxy/acetylene on GM axles when working at the dealer.

maybe somebody used a bearing they had available to repair previously and not the right bearing!

make sure when removing the pinion gear buy driving on the pinion nut area ,, the head of the pinion is not in contact with the inside of the case ,,, you will be trying to drive the pinion thru the side of the case . looks like using a torch to blow out the small bearing is your only choice now.

I would have hoped that you've removed the ring gear/differential carrier assembly prior to trying to press out/drive out the pinion assembly.....didn't see any reference that's why I'm asking.....

Yeah that would be major oops… everything else is removed from the carrier.

Agree need to watch that, as it is, it’s still and inch away from hitting the case

Sorry....I assumed so....but had to ask....maybe a 50 ton or greater press?? Just be careful as something with that much pressure on it may shatter.....use a face shield...

If it was't on the other end of the continent I'd offer to press it out... My press is only 35 tons but I haven't seen anything in the size of a pinion gear it wouldn't move.... You get into 4" or bigger I might not be able to move it but that pinion bering is around an inch...

If your going in with a torch you might try cutting the lip of the inner race and pulling the rollers out one by one, then the inner race might drop through the outer race opening. I dont know the dimensions of the races but it's what I'd try first, surgical approach before the all out molten steel option.
