Sorry for the problems....vet bills are kicking my butt. Turns out one of my PD's has cancer

Life has been kicking my *** lately. Just venting..
Been dealing with the wife and daughters health problems, then the wife curbs her car and the alignment is all messed up, not to mention the tire damage after I just put new tires on the car. Then when she was in the Hospital, her car battery died. Daughters battery and my truck battery died too back in January.
Then today driving the wife back from doctors appointment, the ram 3500 looses second gear, and seems lockup not working? Might have broken the band in the transmission, or worse. I'd check it out tomorrow, but we are supposed to get snow, and high temps only in the teens.

In September my wife had an MRI which showed several masses in her chest and abdomen, we were sent to an Oncologist. She is already suffering from end stage COPD so this in addition to that. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which had spread and due to her over all physical condition they are unable to use chemotherapy and because of the amount they can’t use direct radiation. This only left Amunotherapy which is no more than trying to jump start your own body to help control the cancer. They have given her 6 months to live and the Amunotherapy isn’t guaranteed to work and at 80 each day is more than difficult to watch knowing that as the days pass we get closer to her last day.

I hear you. Hard to watch a loved one who is sick and it is totally out of your control.

Thank you all for the support and prayers!
Took Glorias car to the alignment shop. First quote was $900 for inner and outer tie rod ends, lower ball joint, and alignment.
Not wanting to deal with it in the sub teen temps, I said OK, fix it. Get a call a few hours later that the rack and pinion is cracked too, and it would cost around $1,755. They had not started any work yet, so I brought the car home and ordered the parts (around $600). So now I know what I have planned for this weekend.
On the truck, My plan is to pull the pan and valve body and air check the trans. I think I can change out the front band of the 48RE without removing the transmission? Hope to get it back on the road until summer.
I have been getting motivated to put the small block Coronet 500 back into a daily driver after all this.
The 71 Charger really not daily driver with the 4.10 gear, spool, MT ET Radials, 100 octane fuel, and no heater. when I commute about 40 miles to work and back each way (80+ miles a day.)

She has dementia so she thinks she has a cold, I do all I can but at times I have to find a quiet place and just cry. I do all I can to bring a smile to her face, special meals and desserts and gifts help bring that smile. Just too much to deal with at times, thank you for your prayers.

Drained the transmission fluid (has an aftermarket pan with drain plug) to let it sit over night before pulling the pan and valve body.
The fluid looked really bad, black as used motor oil.
Parts for the wifes car also arrived.
Weather is supposed to be high of 60 degrees! Working outside in the driveway.
Hope I can just toss a new band in to fix the transmission until summer.

Pulled the transmission valve body, and the band looks ok, but was way out of adjustment.
Replaced the shift comb detent ball with the bullet type repair kit. The shifter was really hard to get out of park.
Had a drip pan under the transmission, but after pulling the valve body, too much fluid still camo out and started to overflow the drip tray, so got some trans fluid on the driveway now. First time I pulled a 48 RE valve body that uses the throttle valve electric motor.
I thought I would leave it in place, the when I put the valve body back in, I forgot to put the shift lever on, so have to remove it anyhow.
Do that tomorrow after getting a case of transmission fluid. The arthritis in my shoulder got a good workout.

Gentlemen,
I am truly sorry to read of your burdens; I wish I or anyone else could do something, anything,
to take on some of the load for you, I really do - because I've been there, in spades.
Y'all know my story, as "vented" on several occasions on this forum - so I wish I knew the
magic formula to help you both to get through what you're facing now as a result.
I'm sad to say - I don't; I can only tell you what's worked for me so far.

What I can offer is my prayers for you and the offer of the message that if I can manage to still
be standing after the gauntlet I've been run through....so can you.
It's all in His hands, of course - your job in all of this is to simply be meaner, tougher than the
challenges - because others need you to be.
Sometimes it helps just knowing you're not alone in the fight, too - even if it's just some folks
you know through an online forum, you know?

I offer you my deepest sympathies and prayers and support from up here on the ridge, along
with all the encouragement I can muster in my own short time left.
You will beat this - and you'll help others through it, too!!

I think, as usual, @moparedtn said it very eloquently - better than I could have.

There is nothing more honorable than taking care of a loved one during hard times. You both should be proud of what you are doing, even though it is very difficult. I wish you both strength and peace as you go through this. Take it one day at a time, my friends, and we'll all be here at FBBO to talk to and to help where we can.

I have FMLA (Unpaid) intermittent time off so I can take care of the wife and family.
Wife (and kids) have doctors appointments today, and then I have Jury duty tomorrow.

I have worked with the old 518 transmissions, but did not know the issues on the transmissions with the electronic governor pressure solenoid and sensor?
Got the truck back together and still having the second gear problem. Did some more Google searching, and found out about the governor sensor problems.
I have no OBDII codes? Is there a way to test the sensor and solenoid from the electrical connector?
If I have to pull the valve body again, I will rebuild it with a shift kit and all new electronic solenoids, and sensors.

We have been there. It hurts to deal with that.
Mary's first dog Raja developed bone cancer, our first dog together Mopar developed a brain tumor, our first female Domino did too.
You want to save them and it hurts like hell when you can't.
Pet insurance helps with the Veterinary bills but nothing seems to ease the pain of losing a pet.

What exactly is it doing in 2nd? Is it trying to shift at all? Is it kicking down to first? Will it shift into 3rd if you get it wound up in second and let off? We are also having some 2nd gear issues w a 48re in our 03 diesel.
The sensor and valve, I think I would just replace. I don't know of a way to test the valve. It seems several valves suffer from wear in the pre '10 solenoid style transmissions.

I had shifting issues with my '01 48RE, and I thought maybe at 183k miles it was telling me it finally needed a rebuild. Turned out that the kickdown linkage somehow became loose/disconnected from the cable mount. After it was reconnected and adjusted, it's as good as new.
