70 Charger R/T SE Daytona sunroof project is starting soon.

It looks like it has the California noise reduction turn downs. N95? Great looking car!
My parent's 70 Charger R/T SE did not have the bright exhaust tips either, and it was purchased new at Ernie Bock Dodge in Norwood Massachusetts. It must have been ordered with the N95 noise reduction option as well. My California V code 70 Charger R/T and the Plum crazy purple California Charger R/T that I am using for this project both have N95 as well! Both will be getting bright exhaust tips though! I saw another photo of the 70 purple Daytona with the drivers side door open, and it also had the six way adjustable drivers seat option,so I acquired one for my clone!

I found a few pictures of the actual green 70 Charger R/T Daytona taken in 1970 at the Hantramck design studio parking lot. Note the issued to Chrysler Michigan plate on the rear.

Mikes replica. I provided a clean Texas body with NOS rear quarters already on it for this build. He drives this car like he stole it from the Hamtramck parking lot,and the cops are chasing him!

You should sell your 68 Charger to gain funds to finance that project.

Interesting bit of history there. I just find it very odd that both the purple and watermelon photos show a stock rear window when the fastback conversion was one of the first things they cleaned up for the racing versions in the original Charger 500 and then the Daytona and later the Superbird. The stock window wasn't aerodynamic at all.

Agreed, the flying buttress rear window created turbulance at speeds over 150 MPH. The fact that the two cars didn't receive the window plug flush glass treatment tells me that they were built for show purpose only, and Chrysler either didn't want to spend the extra money,or didn't have the time to have creative industries do the flush glass conversion. The original Daytona press release car that was shown to the public,a white car with a red stripe in early 69 didn't have a window plug either!

True, but that original press car didn't make sense either, considering that the fast back window was already created for the earlier 500 model. Oh well. Makes it easier to do a tribute. :)

I have to look for those door edge guards! I think I have one side!
The door edge guards came on my car when I purchased it in the 80's and have been on there since. I have even made money on them when a gentleman bet me they weren't a Chrysler part number, until I should him that had a Chrysler part number on them and how they were made, notched and contoured to the body. He assumed I stuck on some Auto Zone cheap chrome pieces. While I am not a fan of them they have grown on me after 32+ years.

I had a complete Daytona kit, that I put together with parts from several vendors to do a complete 69 Daytona with the steel window plug and date coded AMD rear window. After I bought the Daytona stock car,I no longer needed the 69 Daytona conversion kit,so I traded it to my friend Dave for the rust free Arizona desert 71 Charger R/T. The stock car came with a whole other Daytona kit from Dayclona. I have since sold the stock car with the kit. So I have enough parts left to build this 70 Daytona replica, but I don't have anymore rear window conversion parts, which works out perfect for this build, because it doesn't require them.
When's he putting it up for sale?

I am hoping that when I retire,we can find the time to put it together!

You need to keep working to pay for all those cars!

I think I have one side up in my loft. I just noticed them on the purple car in the pictures. I will be on the lookout for them at Carlisle. I am going to try to build it as closely to the original car,but I want the bright exhaust tips,I am going to use 15 inch magnum wheels,I found out that wheel vintiques magnum wheels use the same outer hoops as their rallye wheels and will accept the 15 inch brushed rallye wheel trim rings. The only other thing I am going to add is a pair of painted racing mirrors,I love them on 70 Chargers.

I am very excited about starting on this project! This is my third attempt at doing a wing car, this time it's going to happen! I am more of a 70 Charger guy,so it's only fitting that I build a 70 Daytona!

So last night I was up in my loft pulling out some parts that I have to bring to Carlisle for a friend of mine, and while I was up there I started putting my hands on the parts that will be needed to start assembling the car. Two weeks ago, I sold the hood and right front fender that were on the car to a friend of mine who is starting to gather up parts to build a Daytona Charger clone for one of his customers. The hood was a solid California piece, but someone who owned the car before had stripped all the paint off the car, except for the roof and left it outside so it was covered in surface rust. I changed the trunklid quarter panels and dutch panel so that took care of the surface rust on the back of the car. I have a nice purple driver's side door from a 70 R/T that I am going to use for the car. The drivers side fender came from an f4 green car,has some minor surface rust on it,but it will clean up with some evaporust, and etch primer, before the epoxy primer is applied. I have a super clean Texas hood for the car that I already brought down from the loft and put on the car when my friend took the other hood. About three years ago there was an ad on Craigslist for some Mopar parts, and in the background in one of the pictures was a 70 Charger right front fender,so I called the guy and asked him if he would sell the fender, he said that he would, so I went and got it for this car. It has a little rust on the very bottom behind the wheel, but it is the perfect fender to convert to a Daytona fender. So all I need to find for the body is a nice clean 69/70 Charger right side door. The original doors are super solid rot wise, but have the heavy surface rust from being stripped and left out in the weather. So the only area of the car I will really have to deal with the surface rust is on the top of the cowl. I will sand it with 36 grit, then go to 80 grit, then several coats of evaporust, then a few coats of etch primer, then epoxy primer should work.if I don't like the way it cleans up,I may lightly sandblast it with black beauty before applying the evaporust. Once all the body panels are welded, aligned and the car is in epoxy primer, the sunroof assembly installation will be the next task.

To install the sunroof assembly,I have my 69 Charger R/T SE sunroof car in the garage to use to get the correct measurements from to properly locate the sunroof on the roof of the car. My plan is to trim the roof piece back to where I feel it will graft in best, then make a poster board template of it,lay it on the roof in the proper location according to the measurements from the other car, and then mark it it a sharpie. Then I will cut the roof skin on the car 3/4 inches inside of the poster board template, and use my stepping tool to put a flange on all four sides of the cut. I should then be able to maneuver the assembly in front underneath it screw it in with the factory support braces and those braces and the flanges should support the sunroof assembly while I weld it in and blend it.
