We’ve found another cool hot rod. I have history with this one as I tried to buy it in 2005. All these years later it ends up in a junkyard. This is part 1 on a series we plan for this truck. Click to open the video and enjoy
Petty Blue Lil Red Express truck JUNKYARD find

Not much Lil' Red left, a caved-in cab VIN & chassis,
in a few boxes, from out in the woods, is not much

albeit the prices vintage trucks go for when done right
after another $50k-$70k later, be a nicely done truck

Only available in Black, Orange, Red & Green IIRC
were either a Warlock or Lil' Red

I don't know they had
a 99 or 999 coded (special paint) Petty Blue ever built from the factory

could be a Lil' red express thou
I have never ever heard of any or seen any

doesn't mean they can't have, but it was Red 1st, as was shown above

It’s definitely a LRT. No it’s not factory paint. I looked at it after the previous owner painted it. Let’s just say he got behind some bars for a few years & the truck suffered sitting outside.

Lil Reds were only red, hints the name lol. There were was a super rare dealer package 440 “midnight express” that was black.

Warlock was what ever color you wanted.

This has been in my family since 78, they’re really cool trucks, kinda the last page of the muscle car era, had to use a truck to bypass emission laws.

Went to look at one last Tuesday. It has been sitting under a tempo for over 20 years. Most of it is there although the engine is out of it. There is some rot in the floors and door bottoms but otherwise looks solid. The interior isn't bad BUT something's been pissing in it for a good number of years and it was all I could do not to puke while snapping shots of the VIN. The downside is it would be a bitch to get it out of where it is. Be curious to know the values of these things in restorable condition.

Sad what happens to vehicles. Lot of work a head of you. Wish you luck and post pics when possible. Hope you can save it.

I need to get around to doing something with my two Little Red Express trucks. I have a 78 and a 79.

Yea I tried to buy it 15 plus years ago. It was sitting in the guys back yard then freshly painted & stripped down. Water standing in it from a recent rain & he wouldn’t sell. He had several cool old cars. Since then many he sent to the crusher when he needed a few bucks.

Plus, the '78 trucks had no cats on them. The '79 trucks do.
Yep. The same man behind the hemi was handed the rule book and said find every loophole. Vehicles with GVWR of 6,000lbs or more were exempt from emissions. So drop in a police interceptor 360 with a 340 cam, and presto, fastest production vehicle in 78 and even 79 with the emissions.

"Police Pursuit" is the proper Mopar term...the "Interceptor" moniker is a Ford trademarked term.

The 78 had a 68 340 spec camshaft, a double roller timing chain, the 800 cfm Carter fireball theromquad carb, with not cats or air pump. They also had a loadflght 727 transmission with a higher stall speed torque converter. The internals were like a Hemi torqueflight, with the 4 gear planetary and heavy duty clutches. A 9 1/4 rear axle with 3.55 gears completed the performance part of the package. It was a pretty hot setup for 78. The prototype Little Red Express Truck also had W2 heads and adjustable rocker arms too,but those were nixed from the production versions. 2188 were built.

About 4 years ago I put a new full exhaust system on mine pumped out the gas tank with an electric fuel pump, put new calipers pads and brake hoses on it. I mounted 4 tires on it,put new plugs in it,and a new mini starter I fired it up and pulled it in the garage. I took the air cleaner off of it and was trying to adjust the carb, when it started sputtering like it was going to die. So I opened up the door and went to give it some more throttle to keep it running and smoke started billowing out from the drivers side of the dashboard! I quickly shut it off and disconnected the battery and I put on a leather work glove and reached up under the dash where all the smoke was coming from ,and when I pulled my hand out the interior insulation up behind the dash was completely engulfed in fire in my hand! I ripped out the rest of the insulation narrowly avoiding a major catastrophe! Had I stayed under the hood too much longer that truck and possibly my whole garage could have burned to the ground with all my other cars, parts and tools! The alternator guage had a melt down, so I pushed it back outside and haven't touched it since!

WOW! Close call

My uncle bought it from my great grandfather, he drove it a couple times then parked it for 20 years. Then he decided he wanted to sell it, so had a “mechanic” “fix” things . Rather then clean out the gas tank, he deemed it a carb issue, trashed the original carb, and threw a 600cfm edelbrock, it ran like a 318 2 bbl at best. Turns out he didn’t hook up the vacuum advance, or kick down.

After begging him I finally got him to work out a deal to sell it to me, I cleaned out the gas tank and threw a 69 383 avs I had laying around on it. Even though it’s a little rich, it runs great, and I drive it as much as I can. These are awesome trucks!

I do miss driving mine,my wife used to love driving that truck! She drives a 96 Indy Ram now for her spare vehicle!
