Hello All,

Got a 64' Fury Slant 6 225 with a single barrel carburetor.

I am guessing either Carter BBS 3679S 1-barrel or Holley R-2889A. Not sure, let me know. (I can take a picture when I get home.)

Anyway, I am leaking gas out of the bottom of the fuel bowl. Thinking I am going to have to take the carb off and inspect the floats in the bowl/needle also possible the gasket is broken.
Anyone know I can get to the necessary components without taking the whole carb off. If so, do I need to buy the new gaskets / rebuild kit?

Never did any carb work on this car or in general. Does not seem to be a terribly difficult task but I figured I would ask y'all before I get started.

Thanks,

There should be numbers stamped on it or a metal tag. Make sure the line and fitting on the bowl are not loose. You should be able to get a kit. You also will want to take it off the motor to clean and repair it.

Typically, the Carter carb, the top comes off by removing the screws, disconnecting the linkage and choke operating rod. Beside the casket between the carb and manifold, there is a gasket between the throttle plate body and fuel bowl....a leak could develop at that point. Its possible that the float needle valve is leaking or the floats are out of adjustment or have absorbed fuel. There are several drilled passageways, which are sealed with pressed in plugs...which could be leaking. The Holley carb is usually a Model 1920....the float bowl is of a vertical design, with 4 perimeter screws and a gasket which is prone to leak. Additionally, the accelerator pump diaphragm can rupture and cause a leak. Ad mentioned, go to a reputable auto parts store and provide the carb Model number and make, slong with the vehicle's year engine snd transmission and they will provide a rebuild kit and cleaning chemicals. Thr kit comes with a parts list view, an assembly diagram, settng information for adjustments. The one barrel carb is very simple to disassemble, clean, re-assemble and adjust.....take your time and do it yourself.....any questions???? .....just ask...... There are several small parts and clips used....take your time.....don't force any small parts....look for small psrts or clips.....do you have a Factory Service Manual for your car....they are available on line for free....just print the section you need.....just my opinion of course.....

IMO.....THAT IS DEFINITELY a Holley carb......the serial numbers change from year to year but the carb is a Holley design and NOT A CARTER BBS model. It might not be the origional as it may have been replaced by others b4 you aquired the car. The 2nd pix shows the fuel bowl and the 4 attaching screws. If you have access to the Factory Service Manual for your car, it shows complete model number and all relevant settings and adjustment values and procedures plus disassembly and re-assembly parts. The FSMs are available on line for free.....the Holley carb is a very simple design snd is easy to rebuild....PM me if I can help more.....

The ID number on the carb so far as I can see it is
List 3672

Found this rebuild kit:
CK73 Carburetor Kit for Holley 1920

Figured I would run it by you before I pulled the trigger and bought it. Thanks for the help. First carb rebuild.

If I were you, l would proceed. The Carb Doctor is a good source. There are other vendors on the internet as well. Perhaps, you could, if interested, do some comparison shopping, using the R3672 number. The rest of the numbers on the Carb Doctor's list are for the different year's and car builders variations of the basic design, such as linkage variations, choke type, metering calibration poihts, air flow capacity, etc. Which ever supplier you decide upon, make sure that the kit comes with a detailed parts list and instructions and adjustment settings to use when reassembling the carb. Get a good quality carb cleaner (aerosol can) or an immersion cleaner (usually sold in a 1 gallon can with a basket for small parts)....both available at a well stocked auto parts store. Follow instructions for use....use safety glasses, gloves. DO NOT REMOVE THROTTLE DISK FROM SHAFT OR CHOKE PLATE FROM SHAFT .... the screws are staked and will break if removed. Take your time and identify the parts removed.....you'll be fine......the internal screws are small... use care when reassembling not to cross thread or over tighten. I usually use a silicon spray on all gaskets to keep them from sticking and easier removal the next time....but this is my technique. .....
