Had a leaking axle seal or gasket. Pulled the axle this morning, and in looking in the axle tube on the right side with a flashlight, saw this part about 16 inches in. What is it and what does the job entail? 69 4-speed GTX. Is this a pinion shaft thrust spacer.

Yup. Carrier needs to come out unless you have non-stock green axle bearings.

Somebody didn't set axle side play. It was to tight and broke pin that hold those together. Before you put right axle loosen adjuster half turn. Side play spec is in service manual. Service Manuals – MyMopar
Besure you have all 4 pieces and you a new pin. You can make a pin.

They can be removed, installed by making tools with broom sticks. I've had success.

Probably another piece that looks just like that one on the other side. Pull the other axle out and see if it's laying in the tube or if it's still sitting in the center of the diff. Those pieces are supposed to be held together in the diff with a pin. If you can't find it, I'd recommend you pull the rear off and see if it's in the bottom. If not....rotate the diff and see if you can find it and hope it's not meshed up with the spiders or the ring and pinion. Most likely someone over tightened the axle end play adjuster and it worked the pin until it broke. If you can find the other piece and you don't see any other damage once the rear cover is off, then you can most likely feel safe to install a new pin if you can get the broken one out of the pieces you have....or go with the Green Bearings and don't worry about re-installing the 'center thrust pin' assembly.

There was 1/8" of endplay before I started disassembly, the adjuster it tightened into the flange so tight I'm making a wrench to hold the flange while I try to loosen it. So, the easiest fix would be green bearings.

Okay I'm going to get the black one right now...

Green bearings is a fix but make sure you have all the pieces! Popping center maybe a bit of a hassle in car. Need to put a small pry bar or something on top of suregrip to keep it from turning. A large pry bar in bottom SG pry it out. If alone leave caps on witn 3 or 4 turns on threads. cap are marked but they only go one way no changing left right or up side down.
After typing all this green bearings sounds good but a lot more money.

I’m thinking I’ll pull the axle complete. Couldn’t talk to Gevo’s today, they are at a swap meet.

Put the rear of the car up on jack stands and and let the rear end hang down and pull the cover and look for damage. If there is any, you should see it. Use a bright flash light and if there is any, you will see it. Look into the 'holes' in the diff. Might even put one axle in and see if one side will spin any so you can look at the spiders when they rotate. Might have to lock down one axle and grunt on the other to make it 'differentiate'....yeah, I said that :D There's really no need to pull the whole rear end out to check things out.....

I’ll look further. Thanks
