Entertaining myself in retirement:

No cashier's at Lowe's so I go to 'self checkout'. Scan the bar code on top of the paint can instead of the side...locks up the register. Get tired of waiting for an 'associate' so I hop on another. Lock it up too. Still no one comes to assist...so I lock up multiples before someone finally comes.
She's not happy, so I say, " Maybe they should fire me and get a new cashier.

She did not find the situation near as entertaining as I did.

I always have the problem of having something on the handle bar tray of the cart and forgetting to scan it then notice it once I'm loading the stuff into my truck. They watch me closer now lol

My problem is trying to fit EVERYTHING in that tray so I don’t have to bend over.

I thought that was compensation tray. Anything small enough to fit there is compensation for having to work as a cashier. Do they expect people to work for free?

And what's more, is she didn't even thank me for shopping at Lowe's!

It did put a smile on my face, watching her reset multiple self checkout registers as I exited the store...while another customer was calling for help from the next row over.

You go to the grocery store and there's a half a dozen employees hanging around the self checkout watching. Makes a lot of sense

I use the self-check at Home Depot as it is pretty simple and quick (most of the time). Every so often, the code reader gets goofed up locking up the thing and hold for an attendant while the station bleeps out "Customer needs assistance."
The grocery store is another that has irritated me as the fruit and produce stuff requires some added steps and until recently, the self-check area had nowhere to set grocery bags once loaded up; little counter space. Couple times set the loaded bags on the floor.

Got used to having to bag the groceries – next they’ll require you to stock the shelves from the warehouse before you put them in the cart..

In the past, I have used the store ladders, so I didn't have to track down an employee when an item I needed had an empty shelf. After getting scolded, I bother the help. On more than one occasion I have shown a Lowe's 'associate' the unopened case of items above the empty shelf...after they told me they were 'out of stock'. Their numbering system makes the full cases easy to find. Some actually get irritated by being asked to do their job!
