1966 B body steering column question

Looked at a 1966 Belvedere yesterday.
And noticed a much difference than my car.


Looks a lot like a 67 column is it because this car was column shift ?
My car is a 66 but has a rubber seal and is floor shift

67 column will not work in a 66, because the dash is not cut for the bigger diameter column. Question has the dash been changed?

Don't know that answer.
.car was at the Spring Fling this weekend and I noticed the lower column.

As it turns out. I did not take a picture of the interior.
But the car was bench seat column auto

If I recall correctly, the 66 column is very similar to the 65, even using the same TS switch. 67 year began the collapsible style column.

There is supposed to be something for that orange piece to slide onto.

Here is the "bucket" and this is the front view. I am holding it in the general position. There are just two small screws that hold the plastic PRNDL in place. Inside the bucket is where blinker cam assembly sit.

This is the piece that the previous photos sit on top of. The gear shift lever goes in that square boss on the right side of the picture. But looking at the inside of this, there is no tang, tab or slot for something to connect to.
How the heck does the little orange thing attach?

Anyone got suggestions for what I am missing?

So, where does this gasket go? As you can see, it has marks and indentations that perfectly fit and match up with the steering column cup or bucket ( the first piece on top of the column) and the second piece which holds the blinker switch. But, when I put it together with it, there is such a gap between the two that I can't get the two pieces to mate up and accept the four screws. I can talk to it, serenade it, caress it, lube it and even smash it....
alas, no love.
I take it out and the two halves go together nice and smooth.
Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?

I didn't even think of that. It looked and fit as if it went towards the top of the steering column - but thank you for that answer.

Now, I am back at it after a long break...we are in the middle of calving season so the amount of time spent on the project kind of gets pushed around.

Here is another photo maybe someone would know about. These are two plastic discs that go on the steering column shaft, but where?

I have done a poor job of documenting how things came apart...plus months at a time away don't help...

You are correct. I saw the imprint of the nut holder on the lower firewall plate and it is exactly the same size as the bottom of the gear shift lever that goes in the column...

Any way, would you know what these two spacers are for and where they are supposed to go?

Those go at the bottom of the column and center the steering shaft in the housing. On the attached diagram they are called the support. The bearing at the bottom of the shaft is inserted in it I believe.

Somewhere there is a thread on replacing the bearing with a newer bearing.

EDIT, At least not in a 1966 FLOOR shift column

The only thing there is a rubber / plastic dust seal
Which gives me an idea. I wonder if the rings you show are the remains of said lower seal
