I’m frugal, and wore stuff like that to save money when I was hauling hazardous waste, nobody cared what I looked like, I was an elite with all my teeth. My wife trashed all those jeans when I retired, said they weren’t fit for donation.

In addition to ridiculous initial cost, clothing depreciates at a horrendous rate. One of the things I liked about driving a truck was that I could wear inexpensive functional stuff, and specialty items not suitable for daily wear were tax deductible. When I was a lawyer, I had to wear fancy professional attire, and I couldn't write it off. Finally beat the system by buying high end stuff at re-sale shops, when I worked in Chicago. Stuff in my size went cheap.

In the 80s, my wife was still concerned about dressing in the latest style. I remember her clothing expense approaching my student loan payments. She cringes when she thinks about it today. In her defense, she got into the habit while working a commission sales job. In the 90s, she shifted to wearing vintage 1960s pieces, and looked totally hot at minimal cost.
