I'm cleaning up the original motor mounts on my 70 Charger 383 HP. They look ok to me, but should I be disassembling and replacing the isolator? Is that a thing or will my 55+ year old mounts be fine?

The rubber part of my mounts seemed fine, but I replaced them. How often does the motor get removed, and when was the last time it was out.
Those answers for me are: probably never, and 1977

This is the first time they've been out and will likely never be out again unless there's a major engine issue. I just had the engine rebuilt staying close to stock, so not pumping massive HP.

Is there any cracks or any separation visible from the steel from rust? If they look good and you're not going to beat on it try them. Since the rubber parts fit either side maybe put the passenger side on the driver side as it was just a cushion for torque all those years compared to the drivers side. This way you know the one that was being pulled on for decades is no longer doing that job. Just my thoughts..

OR —- they are inexpensive —- this is the perfect time to just go NEW —- once for life —- and be done with them…..

Run what you have and install a restraint on the drivers side mount.

Sorry for the ignorant question, but can just the rubber isolator part be replaced or is it an all or nothing?

It depends on how you look at it. Yes, just the rubber isolator can be replaced, but it comes with the metal plates attached. The part that attaches to the block can be kept and not replaced.

Cars with automatic transmission are a easier on driver side mount than 4-speed cars. If your's is 4-speed, I would definitely replace it. As someone else said, they are relatively inexpensive.

I also changed the one mount that supports the rear of the 727. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing the mounts are new. Compared to the cost of all the other bits, they were cheap.

Run the old as is and see what happens, new stuff is garbage, including poly mounts.
Another option, drill a hole through the entire mount and put a bolt/locknut on it, do not tighten all the way.

I replaced both rubber mounts on my 64 wagon, both made the car vibrate, it took me forever to determine the issue as everything was new/rebuilt.
Installed the old hard rubber mounts and problem solved.

Engine will twist, the driver's side does not just pull up, both mounts can be damaged over time.
I've dealt with this for a while on another car, new mounts, old mounts, poly mounts, finally drilled a hole and put bolts through both, now going to solid mounts.

I will watch my engine while running, to check on any movement at the new mounts.

I just replaced both. The passenger side was the one that was torn and separated.

I did what I said I would do. Fired the mighty 318 yesterday, and observed the mounts. Seemed fine to me. However, I had not really looked at them before. Just seemed logical to replace them, while the engine was out. I still have the originals here somewhere.

Thanks all, I'm going to buy a new set of isolators from 440source as suggested by Billccm above. I'll keep the originals on hand and use the engine side of the originals. They should last another 55+ years, then it won't be my problem.

Only thing I will add is.
Do not purchase [ Anchor ] brand mounts.
They are cheap junk.

Thanks - saw them mentioned as junk several times when I searched through the forums for info.
