Good morning all,

I met the US Car Tool (Scarebird) team at Chrysler Carlisle over the weekend and was impressed with their disc brake conversion offering for my ‘68 Super Bee.

I have the list of the required parts, but was wondering if anyone who has successfully implemented this conversion would mind sharing the part numbers used? I am going to use their “monster calipers” with the larger piston.

Thanks!!
Bob

I like that it's all oe based stuff thats easy to service or replace when needed. But, how does it compare to doing the Disco Tech conversion or buying said package from Dr Diff which is all oe Mopar based stuff. Same price, less, more?

I have that on my 67 wagon, courtesy of the PO buying it[ the new one] from Dr Diff. No issues for me. What's up with yours?

I did a Scarebird conversion on my 66 Charger a few years ago. Mine used the stock 10 inch drum brake spindles and 10 inch Lincoln rear rotors, but it did use the same Celebrity calipers. Works great in my opinion.

Doesn't fit well with the 68/69 sway bar location. You have to mount the calipers on the rear like stock - and you run into hose issues. All that is spelled out in the DiscoTech article. Ideally you want the brake lines to cross the steering axis and they won't on a 68/69 - and quite likely not on 66/67 b-bodies either.

Using off the shelf stuff is all fine and dandy but I think there are better options than the DiscoTech - possibly the Scarebird option.

Ok, thanks for that. Something I forgot about. The car currently does not have a sway bar but when I do the suspension/brake/steering upgrades soon, it will get a bar, but part of those changes is switching to a 70 k-frame. Bar issue shouldn't be a problem, but I'll still investigate the lines.

I that case you can do the DiscoTech conversion with no hassles. Move your hose mounts forward of the control arms and front-mount the calipers. All problems solved. You may also need to get '70 LCAs or weld on the appropriate swap bar brackets for the '70 bar. You can't front-mount the calipers with 68/9 LCAs - the calipers hit the sway bar brackets.

They make no mention of caliper brackets !!
Scarebird make and supply the caliper brackets. That is basically what you buy from them......plus a list of parts you need to source separately.

I used the Scarebird kit on my A100, and the parts list included the 1990 Celebrity brake calipers as well as Lincoln rotors.

Some of those numbers don't jive with the alleged suppliers....so a little creative adaptability is required. Also worth noting is that the recommended brake hoses are not worth the money wasted on purchase....I had custom hoses made locally from -3AN hose and fittings - fit and look much better. The Chevy offerings are horrible clunky and over-sized to the point of looking downright ugly. To me, it was sheer laziness for Scarebird to suggest those hoses....as they weren't even close to fitting correctly. The caliper brackets are nice though.

Done.

Thanks kiwigtx! Do you have the part number for the bearings and seals by chance?

I used the scarebird swap on my 67 same parts as qkcuda, I went with the 10.75 lincoln rotors , the do fit a 14" steel wheel.
I have had no problems with the set up.
Stops great. Pretty easy install.

Thanks! They are telling me to use the 11.75” 1977 Chrysler Cordoba front rotors with the Celebrity calipers. They say it will clear my 14” road wheels.

Bearings - no, I ordered the recommended replacements from RockAuto, and my brake Guru here looked at them and couldn't stop laughing. We threw those away and bought local - Japanese made Timken's - top quality.

Do not trust the bearings by 'National Bearings' - they are junk.

Seals - I bought two sets of two types....wasn't sure which would fit best or be decent enough to use.

I can not say they will, road wheels and plain old steel are built different on the back side.
If i recall there is one less step down on the road wheels.
The Lincoln 10.75 im running only clear by a 1/4 inch.
I emailed with the scarebird guys when I was adding mine they were a good bunch to deal with.

Ordered my kit earlier today…

Thinking about this a bit further…the calipers will mount in the same position regardless of rotor size correct? So it’s not the rotor size that would cause any interference, just the size of the caliper correct? 10.75” vs 11.75” rotors and would just dictate how much rotor is exposed between the rotor and hub?

The earlier calipers needed some material shaving off.... but I think that has been taken care of now.

Scarebird changed ownership a few years ago....hopefully they are now more receptive to inquiries. :)

The bracket would be different, locating the caliper inboard 1/2" for the smaller rotors. I used 73 dart stuff on my 66 coronet and 78 aspen stuff on my 66 belvedere. I looked at the scarebird stuff, but went the stock route out of pure laziness.
