Small block Chevys are laid out the same way. This wasn't a mistake by a guy unfamiliar with Mopars, this guy was simply stupid.

I've seen that too. It makes very little difference with most stock pistons since they have no valve reliefs and sit so deep in the hole anyway.
This build was crap from the start. Over 70 thousands rod clearance ?? As the bearings get some wear it will rattle even more because of that.
I would have been curious to see if the rod bolts were torqued right, how the bearings looked too.

During the tear down I was surprised no note in the video was made on the torque value of the head bolts, which also would have been a possible telltale of the original build/builder expertise.

So the real still unanswered question I would toss out here for discussion, at the owner's full expense, if it was your motor, should the intake valves if they check out, and/or the rods and pistons be replaced or reused for this rebuild?

Yes the builder messed up and put the pistons in the wrong spot. I've seen this before. But never all 8. As for the rod side clearance? My bet is it has a turned down 440 crank to a 2.200" chevy journal. Mopar rods are .025" wider than a Chevy rod. So the side clearance will gain .050" per pair when using Chevy rods on a Mopar crank. Before stroker cranks and aftermarket rods were readily available this was common. I've never seen any evidence that it hurts anything. To be honest if everything measures ok? It needs 8 intake valves, check the intake seats for sealing, smooth the nicks in the pistons, swap the apiston/rod assy's in the right spot and move on.

I don’t agree with “the damage is done. It can’t hurt it anymore” “start the engine”. And they kept accelerating the engine.

If I heard that I would shut it down right away. I’ve seen Nick rev a hemi? engine that had a puff of smoke issue higher and higher on the dyno until it had catastrophic failure. The engine now needed extensive work like sleeves and who knows what else.

Nick has some good stuff but I don’t agree on everything.
