Radiator recommendation

[1] The hole in the stat are for race w/pumps that do not have a pressure bypass. The std pump has a bypass. Adding holes will just delay engine warm up time...& does nothing to aid cooling.
[2] The benefit of the alum rad over copper/brass is the larger tubes, 1" & larger that can be used with alum. This, in turn, allows for superior fin design & better cooling. The fins are what dissipate the heat....

Fixed it.

Having a hole in the thermostat helps burp the system.

The stat is not airtight. Some have a burp slot/hole, others, the air gets past through gaps. No need for an extra hole.

Drilling a small hole in the tstat does absolutely nothing. Any intrained or trapped air will be eliminated the first time the thermostat opens. The exception is if you like to create work for no reason plus a 1/8" diameter hole compared to the open tstat area is meaningless......# 6 on the list of "old wives tales"..........

Ok definitely won’t be doing that!!!

Well it allows the engine to burp air when filling the cooling system when cold. Otherwise you have air pockets until the thermostat opens. I will add the hole or use a thermostat with a bleed valve. I want my cooling system full and without air pockets when I fire it for the first time for break in.

Refer to old wives tale #6.......

Quick question guys just to determine it’s the rad could I just run it without the vacuum advance hooked up to see if it runs hot?

have you put a new thermostat in this? Have you tried flushing the system? When you put a new thermostat in make sure you test it before you install. Have you cleaned the fins on the radiator? Make sure air can flow freely through the radiator.

That would might aid it in overheating. Vacuum advance will help it idle cooler. Under load its hard to sat what the effect might be. Id advise leave it hooked up.

Yes it has a new thermostat I have tried flushing the system as well and also cleaned the fins on the radiator

Vac adv will only help it run cooler at idle if the VA unit is connected to manifold vacuum [ a very good idea ], not ported.
