CELL PHONES...Are They Really That Necessary???

In Oz, it is illegal to use a cell ph while driving. There are cameras at some intersections that can pick this up. Big brother is watching....

I'm a boomer and almost never have my cell phone with me.
Partly because I worked in a SCIF for 30 years.

they took my land line out 2 years ago i got this fip phone i think i used it 20 times i do not take this phone with me anywhere

It makes doing business much easier. I've bought a house using my cell phone, at a restaurant. They started it, I didn't. I'm just trying to keep up. If you own a landline, they laugh at you. I converted my landline to a cell.

Got first cell phone (calls only, not a smart phone) in the 1990. No monthly fees, I think it was like 20 cents per minute rate, and I could go months without any cell phone bill, and when I did get a bill it was usually less than $5 for the month.
Got rid of digital TV many years ago too. Had a Channel Master OTA receiver / recorder to get local channels before most of them started streaming on the internet for free.
I'm still looking at ways to reduce internet costs? Tryed tethering my smart phone WiFi for home internet / streaming, but signal and speed were not very good, so I still have the two bills for internet and cell service.

I still have a land line....I give out my LL number to just about all doctors and other professionals for a reason....I GET VERY FEW SPAM CALLS ON MY CELL PHONE!!! Yeah, it's costs me more but my wife gets numerous spam calls on her cell all the time and I get very few calls on mine. I hate it when my cell phone rings and it's a junk call but it doesn't happen very often.

I may be the only person on the planet that doesn't own a cell phone.
Nope, count me in. And I am 20 years the younger than the average b-body forumite. I had one issued to me by my work for a while, used it to make phone calls exclusively, to coworkers. That has been gone for a while now and I do not miss it!

I own a landline, much to my providers dismay, as they have to maintain the line then. Laws about landline phones are OLD, and hold the providers accountable, mostly to do with emergency services liability etc. You can report the provider to the Feds if you really want to. If it goes down, they send someone within a few hours to troubleshoot it. meanwhile, they offer my internet also. If that goes down, the laws are lax and they will ignore it for days at a time.... unless I call right away and tell them I am tracking the downtime because legally I do not have to pay for the missing service.

Last I checked, when cell coverage goes out the consumer is supposed to deal with it, maybe the provider will throw you a bone. might be able to call up and complain and not pay for the downtime, i am not sure. But I know they are under no obligation to fix it like a land line other than people will find a new provider(free market at work)

Landlines work during a power outage also, and you don't have to charge them lol. Hardlines are not obsolete, they are just more expensive and regulated for accountability for the providers. Maintinaing miles of line is more expensive than a single tower.

Had to look up forumite LOL

I do not have a land line. I do not have a decent camera.
Just last week I was in Nanuk Manitoba, at a lodge. A large male Polar Bear came up to the window.
My cell phone took some nice pics.
If I have wifi while away from home, I can monitor the security camera using my cell phone.

I mostly send messages, only to a few folks.
