Recently replaced ignition parts on my 66 383HP Charger including the pictured black cap. Never seen one with a breather. Standard brand I believe. Anyone else seen these and have an explanation why it would be needed? Pertronix electric ignition if that matters.

So apparently my memory is fine & I didn't just pull all that outta my butt....The vent on the pictured cap is to relieve buildup of ionized gases, from the arcing of the rotor tip to the cap contacts, inside the distributor. The addition of the vent to replacement caps started in the 1980s.
Mystery solved! I always wondered where those extra ions were coming from in my garage. The vent on the pictured cap is to relieve buildup of ionized gases, from the arcing of the rotor tip to the cap contacts, inside the distributor. Probably due to the air fuel mixture getting so fat at altitude the weak spark couldn't fire certain particularly rich cylinders...A clear cap would be very cool. Could stand there for hours and watch all 8 firing off over and over. Back in the day I never had an issue with a cap. Especially going only 10K miles. I did have issues once in awhile with the dual points. Recall one time going over Tioga Pass in Yosemite in my 67 440/375 HP Sport Fury. It began missing as I got to the upper altitude and ran fine after I dropped elevation. Turned out one set of points gap had closed down to about .010 and were slightly burned with a tit on them. Why that only showed up at altitude I don't know but adjusting them solved the problem until I could change them out.
See! The vented cap works!!!!Mystery solved! I always wondered where those extra ions were coming from in my garage.
Was it a 4 speed?A clear cap would be very cool. Could stand there for hours and watch all 8 firing off over and over. Back in the day I never had an issue with a cap. No that's great thanks. Very cool story. I have an L code 4 speed 68 Monaco 500. QQ1/ black top. I was just curious about the auto coming with a dual point. It was not. But was the fastback model like the Chrysler body and a really great engine. L code I believe it's called. I would still have the car today except I did not order it with A/C and at the time after market A/C was not an option. Had it for 10 years. Still have the order form the dealer filled out. PS, power disk brakes, which also was not ordered originally but Chrysler Corp would not build the car w/o disk brakes so I got a call from the dealer saying they would split the cost with me. $40 my cost. Turquoise with black interior, center console, trailer towing pkg, clock, remote mirror, rear speaker. Due to the 440 it was a special order...not cancelable. All for $3421.19. Sales tax $135 and DMV $57. CA purchase.
I know all you asked was it a 4spd. Could not help but go down nostalgic road.

Mariposa Mike's car is a Sport FuryI like the fact that you still have the order form.
I am working on a 67 L 4speed now. GG1, I imagine yours was LL1.
Jon Gibbs is trying to find all the 66-7 Chargers he can. He lists them all. Even wrecked ones.
Please consider sending a picture of the dealer order form and any other information to him.
Remote possibility that your old car might be out there.

I sent him information on our L 4speed. Our driver auto, and a burnt one. Also a friends L auto, another 4 speed, another 4 speed.
I have corresponded with the original owner of our GG1 that he ordered after a tour of duty. Have his certicard. He doesn’t have any pictures of the car from 1967 or later. Told me his wife hated the car, think he traded it off about 1970.
THANK YOU! I sure missed that.Mariposa Mike's car is a Sport Fury
