Ok, so went through the Tom Hand book, rebuilt everything, took my time during reassembly, reviewed my disassembly pictures as I reassembled - paying special attention to thrust washers and anything that didn't look right (many other posts as I went along), and guess what - I have too much end play.

When I measure pulling the input shaft back and forth it's ~ .099. When I measure flipping the transmission over (so the output shaft also moves a tad", it's .15.

I'm measuring endplay using calipers and a steel tube across the bell housing. Same tube each time, oriented the same way (sharpie) to ensure consistent measure point.

So what's the most obvious thing to look at as I disassemble it? It seems to me there is a lot of movent in the clutch packs s as I can see the part inside move (pic). I have a 3 thrust washers left over (pic) and they are all ~ .062 thick. I replaced all but the one under the sun gear snap ring (the book didn't seem to rebuild the sun gear) - but maybe I missed it.

We're headed out camping today so won't disassemble until Sunday afternoon.

Are there thicker thrust washers I should use? Any part numbers/urls to buy thicker ones are appreciated. They all seemed to match the original thicknesses and end play on input shaft was ~ .063 before rebuild.

I have all original thrust washers as I was doing 1 for 1 replacements.

Any thoughts on typical screw ups is appreciated.

I believe the adjustable washer with sizes available is the one on the pump. You just look for wear otherwise. A little wear on all the washers is just a normal thing with use, just adjust the pump washer thickness.

Where do I find thicker ones?

I have rebuilt a lot of 727's, but do not recognize the thrust washer at the 2 o'clock position in your picture. If you can get the snap ring on the output shaft, with about .010" clearance, the rear stack-up is O. K. What are your front and rear clutch pack clearances. I suspect that you might have left out the .086" phenolic washer under the oil pump. With that back in, your endplay would be around . 013" .

I'll double check, but fairly sure I put a non metal thrust washer on the back side of it. Seems to me it was closer to .062

The small washer with 3 tans started up in the late 70's. The back of the rear clutch is clearances for this. Did that washer fit in your trans?

What year is your trans! a 1970?

Dod you put a small washer on the end of the output shaft before you put the clutch packs in?
Factory was dark brown fiber, aftermarket sells a bronze one with oiling slots. Either is fine.

Thanks, I'll check those out in my pictures and as I reassemble

I rebuilt my 727 about 8 years ago and had an excessive end play issue. Understand I’m not a transmission mechanic so this may fall in the apples to oranges category for your problem. But in short here is a cut&paste of what I eventually found was causing my excessive endplay.

“Started back to work today on the 727 despite bad allergies - but quickly ran into another possible worn part I have overlooked. I focused on the front planetary so much that I overlooked wear on the back side of the rear planetary where it rides against the #8 steel thrust plate in the annulus gear. There's a pretty good groove worn there that pretty much matches up with the thrust plate.

It measures a little more than my .035 in feeler gage which probably accounts for most of my excessive end play in the planetary train. I did check the #8 shim thickness and it mics at .036 so it seems to be in shape. So basically the planetary is riding on the annulus case instead of the thrust washer.”

I replaced my rear planetary with a new one and then my end play all fell into spec. The wear on the back of the planetary was so smooth and consistent that I thought it was factory machining so it didn’t jump out at me immediately. But, you could be looking at a completely different issue.

Good luck.
