Western Digital (WD) MyCloud problems

Looking for any brilliant ideas as to how to retrieve my data from a WD MyCloud 2TB device that has slowed to a snail's pace on me.

Currently have the unit at a PC Data recovery shop....but I wonder if they actually know what they're doing now - it's been three weeks, and they claim to be getting some more software to crack the disk.....jargon for stalling me thinks.

If anyone has experienced this type of issue recently - please post up here or message me.

I know that @MarPar had a similar experience and wasn't able to retrieve his data either.

Any help appreciated.

I have a good buddy that has made a good living playing with computer systems administration for years, I sent him a link...

His comments went something like this...

That depends on what’s wrong with it.
I know people in the data recovery business. It’s high tech science.
Good companies like drive savers can do amazing things.
But they’re going to charge an arm and a leg for their highly specialized skills
All of my data is backed up to the cloud all physical devices should be disposable.

I had a solid state drive die on our home computer this summer.
Turns out Dell and likely other "refurbished" computers have really low quality solid state drives.
And here I thought it would be more reliable than rotating media.

It crashed one day with an error message (of course hard to decipher from MicroSoft).
Restarted fine and ran a couple more days then crashed again.
Third time I told my wife to leave it off so I could get a new drive and image it over.
Well it was too late even my Son in Law who is extremely bright and a software develper couldn't image it.
So I had to rebuild the operating system.

Luckily my wifes stuff was on One Drive which was a little finicky to get re-connected but I was successful and got 99% of her stuff back.

Kiwi...I looked up your unit on WD's site, and it looks to be a solid container that has the drive inside. About the only way to get at it is to either cut the case open or to break it open and retrieve the actual drive. That will allow you to pick up a case that you can open with screws and such, and then plug into a USB port to get at the data on the drive. I do not get solid enclosed drives, but I build my own, so I can access the internals. Saves the headache of not being able to use and access the WD-type units. Hope this offers some insight, as it gets frustrating when you cannot access what you saved...cr8crshr/Bill

I had done all of that - this unit basically is a HDD with a network adaptor built into the case.....only because I wanted network connectivity. I tried connecting the USB, but that didn't give me any access to the files stored within.

Something in the 23H2 win 10 update and/or win 11 absolutely KILLS "spinny" drives after a couple of months.
I initially thought it was the fact that both microsoft and google install and enable (without your immediate express consent) apps that attempt to copy all of your files to their respective cloud repositories (microsoft one drive and google offline docs) these are all of YOUR FILES in the documents/pictures/music/videos subdirectories.
You have also granted permission for them to use your files, basically however they see fit, once they are in the cloud.

WTF???

I've had a dozen 5, 4, and even 3 year old laptops HDD become so slow that it renders the machine basically unusable.
This does not seem to be an issue with SSD drives.

BTW- sometimes a drive the doesn't read can be smacked real hard and work long enough to get at least some important data off of it.
There is also a specific "shaking" motion that can possibly free a stuck drive.

Any time I see even a hint of lag or seek issues, I immediately back up crucial files.
