There's a responsibilty issue with the 34 y.o. Can he be responsible with your car? Do it once and you'll be asked again. He needs your car to go somewhere else.

The larger issue is that he needs to get a job and pay for his own stuff just like many of us have. I told his mother let me deal with him and he will either be working and paying his way or out on his ***. I was going to give him a month to get a job or he's gotta go. My budget does not include a grown *** man. Hes the only person that I can think of that is jobless and gained weight.

He got himself into this pedestrian situation, I would not help him by giving him another car.

Not trying to sound nasty here, but wife is not being very reasonable and isn't doing her 34 yr old son any favors. It seems mom is enabling her 34 yr old son. As others pointed out here, that "kid" has very little sense of responsibility! Is he an alcoholic like bio dad? And wife/mom is angry with you? She may want to direct that toward her son. He sorely needs consequences. Blow off paying insurance? Then ya can't drive the car.
Pretty simple.

Wife nor stepson are not alcoholics do drink socially but nothing more. No tattoos other than the before mentioned Jerry Springer episode pretty normal. I see all the suggestions to get him a rental car but that’s not an option right now with money being tight.

Pretty much boils down to I don’t want her X in anything I own and worked hard for. If it wasn’t for the X being a pile of **** I’d let him take the car. But knowing that piece of **** is involved ain’t no way in hell.

Scenario.

Oldest kid from wife's previous marriage wants to go to a wedding for his half brother. But the caveat is that he has to pick up his biological father due to a self inflicted bout of the shakes "DT's" from detoxing and he cant drive. Son wants to borrow step fathers car to go to the wedding and pick up his bio father. Should the step father allow for the stepson to pick up his biological father in his vehicle. Or is the stepfather being a complete asshole for not wanting that dude in his car that he paid for.

The mother thinks he (the step father)) being a selfish asshole and is currently mad at him for not allowing this to happen. Step son allowed the insurance to lapse on his car that the stepfather provided. Biological father couldn't be bothered to help out in any way to get a car for the kid. I say kid but the stepson is 34 years old.

So I guess the question is

What would you do in this situation?
Suck up the pride and let them ride?
Take the heat from the wife for denying this to happen. "She can only be mad for a little while right?"
Take the heat from the kid whom is pissed at you for not allowing him to use the car? "He can only be mad for a little while right?"

Some wives can be mad for a long time, and remind you of it forever.

Wow.. this is a tricky one. At the end of the day, it's not your prize car (right?). And you'll be seen as the good guy. Of course, good guys never win, but you at least avoid being raked over the coals for being "the bad guy" for not permitting it. And you know that's all people will talk about at and after the wedding. Basically, not a hill to die on.

However, I will add one thing... number 1 rule: no X's. If her X isn't/hasn't been in your lives, then this little favor you're allowing can't be seen as changing that. After the ride and the deed is done, but he starts coming around... he gets throat punched. Just say'n.

My wife has never forgotten or forgiven anything in 41 years! Pick your battles wisely grasshopper! In fact she held a grudge against a girl she grew up with for trying to take over a kickball game with her siblings until last weekend when she sat next to her at a church event and they got along great! The kick ball game was in 1968!
