Just use it like cash and you won't have to worry about late payments. My gf gets two offers a week from discover, and shreds them.
I might sign up for a discover..... but I never get one, lol.
(But, if you forget to make the payment on time, just once, the interest and late payment charges eat up ALL that tiny bit of cash back, several times over.)
This is good advice. Mine are locked too. For those who don’t know, you can go online to all the big 3 credit reporting agencies and freeze your accounts. What that does is prevents anyone from accessing them. I’d applying for credit in your name. You can temporarily unfreeze them if you need to apply for credit. It’s a bit of a pain if you are applying for credit, but if you are like most on here, you aren’t applying for any new loans. It doesn’t affect your credit usage with already established accounts. It’s good peace of mind to do this as your identity can not be stolen. My bureaus stay locked.
I have had a Capital One card for over 30 years. It’s still at the 7.99% I opened it at. I pay off every month anyway, but just knowing I beat the bank on that one, makes me smile. It’s the card I use for everything as a thanks to them.My credit union card is fixed 9%.
Almost all cards now are variable and as high as 20%. Some are more.
I haven't seen one below 10% in a long time.
I think 850 is the best...What is perfect? I've never looked.
same, same here.830-835 for years. Doesn't vary much. I get dinged because I don't use enough of my "revolving credit." IE I pay off my **** every month and they don't make a dime of interest on me.![]()

Yep, you can borrow a lot of money and as long as you pay it back in a timely manner you aren't a huge risk. There is a debt ratio that they look at so you don't borrow too much. It's pretty weird that being in debt helps your credit rating. The more kinds of debt the better! Home, credit card, whatever. I think it is paying on those debts on time every month is is what they look at.
Yep. That's called DTI - Debt To Income. That, and your borrow-payback habits.Yep, you can borrow a lot of money and as long as you pay it back in a timely manner you aren't a huge risk. There is a debt ratio that they look at so you don't borrow too much.
I wish the bastards didn’t even have my name or ss#. I never asked for a credit score. Its just something the banks and government have made up to keep us under thumb. F’ the machine!
They want to loan to people who have enough debt they can’t pay it off monthly they can charge that interest. They also make money off the usage charges. Everyone used to pay for that but, now businesses are getting smarter and charging the card user, cash vs credit prices. It's pretty weird that being in debt helps your credit rating. The more kinds of debt the better! Home, credit card, whatever. I think it is paying on those debts on time every month is is what they look at.
I’m close but not 850. Just buying a couple of expensive items in one month on a credit card can tank it 15-25 points for a couple of months, even if you pay up 100% each and every month.
Probably have no score lolI am sure mine is not very high as I have no credit & no credit cards. I have never bothered to look at my score nor have I ever cared.
Everything I own has always been paid for except my house.
The credit card companies that have 'clients' that pay off the balance every month are considered 'dead beats'.Banks are interested in people that carry a large credit card balance, and make monthly payments way less than their balance, hopefully a couple days late.
IF I ever buy a crate motor for my car, I might try to get a card with cash back first. Maybe.
I pay cash for the 10 cents off too....something relatively new here.Point taken!!
We have some gas stations that have two different prices, cash and credit.
I do what I can do.
Wish I could find 20cents off here....only 10Credit price higher than cash price for gas is common in california. I have seen as much as twenty cents a gallon.
If you have no credit cards or any other credit....Mine might be perfectly bad. Is a zero possibile?
I have to keep that in mind.I had 1 of those 800+ credit scores. The theif that stole my identity thought was real handy. I do my best to have a goose egg now. Nobody wants to bother with stealing id for $500 limit.
Things look good with you but using credit cards at restaurants is one of the main places that credit cards get scammed!!I have got some good cash back deals over the years. After I bought my Ram, I kept getting emails about a Ram Mastercard, with an offer to give you $100 cash back if you made a purchase at a CDJR dealership within a month of getting the card. I timed signing up until I was about due to get an oil change in the truck. Pennzoil had a $25 rebate at the same time, and the dealer had a coupon on their site too, so I managed to get a 0W-40 oil change in the trucks 6.4 for about $10 when all was said and done.
That card gives 5% back in any CDJR dealer purchase, so I use it from time to time to get that including when I put a deposit down for my Scat Pack purchase.
Discover always has quarterly 5% rebate offers. In summer for 3 months they give 5% back on gas, which is nice during the driving season. Another quarter they give 5% on grocery stores, and another they do it for restaurants.
Recently more and more restaurants and gas stations are charging a premium to use plastic. So the advantages of using cash back cards are diminishing. But over the last 30 years I’m sure I’ve totaled up a nice amount of money utilizing cards with cash back offers and paying my bill in full monthly.
I've been late on a couple of cards but got 'excused' since my rating is high lolMy gf gets two offers a week from discover, and shreds them.
I might sign up for a discover..... but I never get one, lol.

As I got older I thought it might be good to have more cards....just in case I ended up in the hospital and then died.....I consider my credit rating perfect. Not sure exactly what it is but since I have no intention of borrowing or changing banks, I really don't care what number they give it. I check it about once a year. Last time I did I think it was around 830 whatever that means. I have two credit cards but only use one and pay it off when the statement shows up. Guess I am lucky since I do remember when I was in my 20s & 30s carrying a balance month to month.
I guess the rating number must be important to someone though. I remember it dropped some when I co-signed a Home loan for my daughter years ago.
Yup, closing out a card will ding your score...
