I want to rebuild the original 23-spline A-833 4-speed for my '70 Road Runner. I street drive the car, but it has a 440 with nitrous oxide in it (originally a 383). What upgrades would you suggest I do to the transmission while rebuilding it? THANKS!

Related question - I'm running tall tires & a highway 2.76 gear in it for long distance highway cruising. I have a 3.91 center section (8-3/4" 489 case). I wouldn't mind converting my A-833 to a "3 speed + overdrive 4th gear" and put the 3.91's back in the car. Thoughts?

Sure ! Just don't use the aluminum case ! Also, you better do some research, on the o/d input shaft ... will it fit the 407 bearing? Because I believe the o/d retainer is much larger and won't fit the 383/440 bellhousing.

Is there something wrong with it? Yoke tight in tailshaft? New o-rings in the side plate, gaskets and a dust boot tailshaft seal, unless you see something when you tear it down. I probably wouldn't do an overdrive, it's a three speed. Maybe go TKX.

Check the gearshift levers and if worn and send to Brewer's to redo.

If we're talking A833 OD, on mine, fwiw cast iron case, turned the 5.125 bearing retainer down to 4.8 to fit the aluminum bb bell I got from Brewer's.

Brewer's sells OD trans with the option to get the large or small bearing retainer, maybe the sell them separately?

I was hoping to keep the original case if possible & get it rebuilt locally. Two shops have both quoted me $500 + parts to rebuild. I'm on a tight budget. ($1000 max) New brass synchronizers seems like a good idea + standard rebuild. I will check the shift levers for sure. Should I upgrade any other parts?

It "seems" like the transmission itself is OK except for the piece of the driveshaft yoke stuck inside the tail housing. The transmission turns & seems to shift fine (by hand out of the car).
