63 Dodge 440 4 door with 440 w/8.2 mech compression ( to burn straight 87 pump).. manual 4sp trans w/.71 OD and 3.23 axle w/26" tires. Final drive ratio 2.29.Motor would be 2000 rpm at 70. Think this will work? Weight unknown .

Also, hyd cam 210 int -214 ex.@ 50, 458/470 lift , @ 6., 12 overlap @ 50

Of course it will work.
Many many cars from late 80s on had overdrive with low rpm at highway speeds with much lower displacement.

Depends on your goals.. Easy highway cruiser? Then definitely- 440's have torque all day for applications like yours, especially a mild build like that. No stoplight warrior, but it'll still be fun if driven right. Pretty cool setup, IMO.

That is the gear set up and tire size in my 3500lb 72 Charger, though behind a built 383. You won't use 4th gear unless you are on the highway... so it will essentially be a 3-speed with a wide 2-3 shift. For a street car, 3.55 or 3.73 gears and even 3.91 is better balanced... all combinations of which I have also run before.

A-body with a built 383, A833OD, 3.23, 28" tire, 4th 2k at 70.

A833OD
I use all the gears all the time.
1st is get up and go wanna burn the tires.
If I completely wind out 1st, I'll let the rpms drop a tad before grabbing 2nd, henceforth thereto I just don't wind out 1st and 1 to 2 is fine.
3rd is 3rd is ye 'ol 4th, no complaints, just glad it's not the last.
4th is the reason I installed it, cross country.
Sometimes I'll downshift 4th right to 2nd.

A833
I miss 2nd, it was my favorite.

Swapping in an A833OD into my 62 Dart so I can drive it everywhere and have a conversation and listen to tunes and not have the engine screaming for hours and it's inexpensive and a bolt in.

I am getting ready to install an OD in my 440 RR. 508 stroker so plenty of juice. Currently has 410s. I did the math and I’m going with 3:55 versus 3:23. There is not much difference in cruising RPM but gives a better punch in low gears.

The only thing to worry about with numerically high rear gears is turning the low first gear in the 833 OD into a granny.
I would imagine a 3.91 would be pushing it.

I'm thinking if I don't like it I will go to a 3.55 which will give me a final ratio of 2.52. I'm looking to squeeze a little more mileage from it (if at all possible with a 440 LOL!)on straight 87 pump. Even just a couple more mpg and 87 I'll get to drive it a bit more.I love a challenge.

Sounds like I may be OK. Will have to see with the extra weight of a B body. Thanks, Dave

It all depends on what you want out of it. The challenge with 3.23 is if you drive mostly in town, you may not get the low rpm fuel saving advantage as much as you think because you will spend most of your time in 3rd as 4th will just lug too much. Of all those gears mentioned, my favorite combo was with the 3.73. 3.55 would be my second choice (and a much easier ratio to find).

I have an 833 OD in a 440 powered full size, standard cab, step side truck.

Unfortunately I have no idea what gear is in the non- SG 8 1/4 axle.

I will say this-

1- there are more cross-gate 2-3, 3-2 shifts to stay in the workable RPM band than I would care for, if I could have my way.

2- that 8 1/4 has held up remarkably well to the 440, the manual, the wide tires, and the weight of the truck.

3- it is a blast to drive!
