I am having a problem with my 69 small block (318, no AC) b body that originally has a Saginaw PS pump and seemingly original steering gear. The pump leaks like hell from the shaft so I cannot go anywhere with the pump working. I have ordered a rebuild kit, but it will take around 2 weeks...

Yes that is true. I have changed the fuses in the glove box, they gave me a hard time to change because they were tight in there but it worked.

Thanks for the advice. I will check, whether the studs will be stable enough for a removal/ reinstallation procedure of the gasket, after all I do not want to ruin more then I fixed...

This should be it! Thank you very much. So the extension must be taken off and the gasket installed. On the other hand - would it be feasible to put the black caulk that is mentioned when following your link into the gap? Sounds like a new project for me :-)!
