I am having a problem with my 69 small block (318, no AC) b body that originally has a Saginaw PS pump and seemingly original steering gear.
The pump leaks like hell from the shaft so I cannot go anywhere with the pump working. I have ordered a rebuild kit, but it will take around 2 weeks until it is due to arrive.
I have two questions:
1. Will it be problematic for the steering mechanism in the long run (mechanically) if I just disconnect the belt and drive the car without PS support?
2. Does it make a difference for the steering mechanism if PS fluid is present in the system or does the steering mechanism need the fluid solely for the steering support?
To be clear: I would only cruise to work and back, no hard turns etc...
But I am a bit worried about a problem with the steering mechanism.
What is your take on the issue?
Thanks in advance!
