I think I would try to pressurize the oil system though the oil pressure gauge sender. Making sure to block off any open oil ports.

I agree a bad design for sure. What I ended up doing is I bought a replacement nozzle and a vent (drilling and then installing it) but the way the tank itself is made where the nozzle goes in it is thin and even with a O-ring it will leak some fuel when putting fuel in my mowers. What I do now...

I would add that I also heard that when going over an asphalt (shingle roof) "if" a fire would start and the shingles catch fire it is harder to put out with a metal roof over it.

When I did my 68 RR I used a umbrella valve seal over the pivot with coating of sealer on the pivot and the gasket.

You can also use grease instead of using the bread and water mix. Fill the opening with grease then using a rod close to the inside diameter of the bushing hole give the rod a sharp rap with a hammer and it should come out. Of course, using an inside puller is the best way if available.
