is kickdown really needed

i was wondering if the kickdown linkage is really needed. ive been running for a long time without it and has never had an issue.
 
i think the kickdown allows more tranny fluid to flow faster so when you do "step on it" the tranny can keep up with the engine.i heard other guys have theirs off but haven't heard any horror stories about what damage(if any) was done.
 
Yes, and it's not just a kick down. It's a throttle pressure linkage and the purpose is to override the governor pressure so the tranny knows when to shift based on engine load. You can run without it in a pinch if you block it open some, but it's better to have it working. Do you notice if it shifts to high gear very quickly? Kind of like 1-2-3 as you cross the intersection. If you run it long enough like that you will eventually smoke the high gear clutch pack.
 
Absolutely. It's a "must have" unless you're running a full manual valve body
 
Wow cant believe you did not notice the slipping between 2-3 shift with no throttle pressure or that it was in drive before 15 m.p.h.
 
What if you have a manual/automatic valve body?? I have TCI streetfighter tranny and haven't been running one, maybe I should put one on than. Didn't know I could screw the tranny up.
 
You will be fine with a manual valve body. Just remember to downshift when starting out.
 
You dont need it with a manual valve body as what I use but on the stock valve body you need it as it has some control over line pressure along with controlling throttle pressure. You will cook the tranny without it on a stock valve body. Ron

Like everyone else has said, you definitely need the kickdown linkage if you want your transmission to live for long. It is still required for most aftermarket manual/automatic valve bodies, such as the Cheetah valve body I have with the standard shift pattern. The next step up from mine is a full manual valve body with a reverse shift pattern (P-R-N-1-2-D) for racing, and that one allows elimination of the kickdown linkage.

Bottom line, check with the manufacturer of any aftermarket valve body to find out if they are set up to run properly without the kickdown linkage. If you don't have the linkage and don't care if it does not look 100% stock, an aftermarket cable kickdown linkage kit such as the Lokar kit is the easy way to go. Simple to install and adjust.
 
My trans was fried from the linkage not being hooked up.
I got the cables from "XV motosports for $115.
It came with the throttle and kickdown cable so they match coming off the carb.
They really have alot of adjustments and work good.
If I want I can adjust the trans to shift late or real early, but you can feel when its right where its supposed to be.
