I may want to replace my oil pump with a different one. What is the best one to install in a 440? I heard before to buy a pump with hi volume, not hi pressure. Any ideas? What's the best brand of pump to buy? Thanks!

What's the combo? Stock, mild mods or?? A stock pump is fine for stock and mild builds.....

higher the RPM this motor will see the more volume you want

It depends completely on what you're doin and how the engine is built. If you're racing, or have a very hot street engine where clearances are loose, you want a lot of volume and pressure. Like Don Garlits said run a loose motor and a lotta oil pressure.

Like Cranky said, for most applications, the stock pump is plenty adaquate. Why are you replacing it?

melling or if high performance a milodon.I run a milodon with external pickup

It is a 440 bored 30 over and racer brown cam, nothing special. I am wondering if the oil pump relief valve stuck. I understand that once I pull the pump off the car, take out the little bolt head and there is a spring in there? What am I looking for. This car has about one hour total run time on engine and then sat for maybe two years, or less. I'm going to check the oil pressure first with the gauge though. Any big deal to change the oil pump? It's been a long time since I did one, but if I remember correctly, it was pretty easy. Should I use a priming tool and make sure I am getting oil at the rockers too when I do this? With a stock oil pump in place, what should my oil pressure gauge show at idel when cold vs hot? Thanks

I thought with a high volume oil pump you needed to run a deeper oil pan. I have a stock oil pan now.

Stock Mopar oil pump is plenty adequate for what you say. Why do you suspect it's stuck if it hasn't been running ? Changing it is simple. And yes, definitely prime the engine before firing it up.

Everyone else is thinking the relief valve is stuck. I need to put a oil pump gauge on it and check it. The oil dummy light was flickering and it scared me. I'll do that first, then proceed. I appreciate all the comments.

On my first GTX back in the 70's all i did was change the spring in the pump to one from a hemi.

gave me better oil pressure and i had no problems. It was a cheap swap to do back then.

buy a Melling high volume from ebay or similiar will cost stuff all, and this does not need a different oil pan.

to remove oil pump is 4 bolts there is no spring that goes in, remember to put a gasket on with some rtv or similiar

sorry i will explain better there is a spring ini the pump bu tthere is no separate spring in between block and pump, it is a complete unit

Page one and three under this section? I am a bit confused where to find these pages.

thanks DD...the oil pump part starts towards the end of the first page.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, its been years, but I've changed out these type of pumps before. Hardest thing for me was after priming the engine, was find TDC again to install my distributor.

Ok guys! Used my new oil pressure gauge, and i show about 50psi on start up on a cold engine! 50 psi is pretty good on a cold engine, isn't it? I think I am good to go. Don't need to change the oil pump, after all. Installed a new sending unit, and the oil dash light is out. Thanks for the help!

10psi for every 1000rpm rule of thumb
I have the milodon 2 line pick up and had major problems getting the right pump shaft.
had a pump rotor score the housing and had to replace.
this is a full race motor 900+hp on alky
data logger shows 20 psi idle and 70-80 over 2500 rpm to

as for finding tdc not that hard to r/r dist
take a marker and mark base and block, scribe works too.
pull cap and mark rotor location
remove dist.
note location slot
remove oil pump shaft
prime with hex rod ccw

reinstall drive shaft
rotate until it is back in position, this may take a few tries, use long flat head screwdriver to rotate. be sure it is seated.
reinstall dist rotor should line up with mark
install clamp and align with 1st mark
tighten.
timing should be exact.
i have to prime my racecar several times a year.
i run alky and pull pan to inspect/dry pan oil floats on water.

sorry way too wordy
