Put a rod through the block last night so I am on the look out for a 440 block. I guess I am done for the year, totally suck because I didn't even get one run in the year. I did the burn out and as I was staging I noticed something was really wrong so I shut it down. Got back to the trailer and noticed the rod hanging out of the block by the oil dipstick tube.

I have a 75 short block needs total rebuild....in MI just north of Detroit

Price??? It maybe a little to far of a drive to pick up. I figure that Detroit is about 6-7 hour drive from me. But just in case I would like some other info on the block because I only need a 440 block. I have all the other parts for a 500ci rebuild.

Sorry to hear it w5. I have a '78 motorhome shortblock if you're interested. I'm about 60 miles NE of Madison.

sorry to hear that and I feel your pain hope you find what you need soon.bob

Man Wedge I'm really sorry to hear about your motor. However we do feel your pain.

Did it hurt your heads at all?

Hate to hear that, it really sucks.

I am not sure of the damage yet, haven't had time to tear it down yet. What should I be looking for on the heads to see if there is damage to them?

You know you need to buy a block, crank and rods.

If when the rod breaks the piston can hit the head which inturn means you'll need to fix the heads.

When ours went it never touched the head.

I wonder if the rod broke at the rod bolt or did it break up by the pin. the motor will tell a story as you take it apart.

Good luck and again sorry to hear about this mess

How many passes/miles were on it? One good thing is that it didn't happen at the stripe! On damage to the head....in most cases you'll see evident of a piston hitting a head if it happened. Sometimes a smack to the head doesn't do much if it was a gentle one depending on the heads you're using. Shape of the combustion chamber etc. If it's a good smack, it can crack the head and the cylinder wall...

If I broke one rod can't I just replace that rod and have the crank turned and then have the rotating assembly balanced? Or isn't it that easy?

I did it on the way back to the trailer at the track. The motor started sounding funny after my burn out so I shut it down. Decided to drive it back to the trailer (bad choice). I was driving slow and heard a loud pop so I shut it down.

Sounds like you spun a rod bearing. Once the rod got hot enought it broke the bolt. (Ask me how I know)

Since you were only at basicly an idle or a little over I think the damage will be minimal. But with this being said it's strange the rod come through the block when were not spinning the motor that hard.

Cranky is right... be happy it didn't it at the 1000' mark and you drove through 6-7 quarts of oil on your way to the wall.
