Here's the start
molassas tank.jpg
After 1 week.(at 4 days I wire brushed it lightly just to loosen up the rust that had started to dissolve)

When you pull something out of the tank, rinse and dry it off IMMEDIATELY, it starts to rust right away!

Nice. I've always got something soaking in my molasses tank. Works well, doesn't it?

Large pieces such as you've shown can fit into an old bath tub, or it's easy to just make a wooden box and line it with a sheet of poly. For large irregular shapes, like a frame, you can even outline the shape on the ground with concrete blocks, line that with the polyethylene, put your part and the solution in and you have a custom shaped tub.

My question is-- how much does all that molasses cost and where do you get that much of it?....................MO

Where do you "dump it" when your done?

Plastic drum, not metal 20 bucks, craigslist
5 gallons molasses 34 bucks, any feed store, fill the rest up with water. About 9:1 ratio

Where do you "dump it" when your done?
Environmentally friendly, they feed farm animals with it.

Absolutely

That's before you dump some rusty metal into it. What is done with it AFTER it is used?

Ok, I got it, lol!

Molasses turns into Phosphoric acid when mixed with water. Phosphoric Acid is easily friendly to earth. It is a slow reacting Acid that does not damage metal. If you where to use Hydrochloric "Muriatic" it would remove rust in Minutes but damages metal permanently.

I would like to see the difference a part weighs before and after just for grins.

I'm using a 1 to 1 ratio, i have a cover for my tank (lives outside) leave the parts in for a few months and hose them off then paint them, you can't tell they are not original

Are you saying the start to finish of that part was 4 days, or did you put it back in after the "wire brushed it lightly" part?

If so for how much longer?

also has the half that's still a little rusty been in the solution at all? The still bad side looks better in the bottom pic than it does in the top pic.

More questions .. does this work for aluminum (intakes etc), plastic (lenses), stainless steel (trim)? What is it not friendly to if anything?

Also does it remove grease build up on engine bay parts and paint?

I may never have to scrub a part again LOL

tallhair, it does not remove grease. In fact, grease inhibits the action and so should be removed prior to dunking in the tank.

I haven't tried it on aluminum, but have had good results with galvanized metal (it may remove the galvanizing totally after awhile, I haven't left it too long as it produces a lot more bubbles and foam than straight steel). Also, while not intentionally trying, I did notice that some copper brake switch parts that were attached to a brake pedal assembly came out nice and clean as well.

Interesting thought about removing rust stains from plastic, I'll give it a try. I'm afraid that it might still leave the iron or steel residue behind though, and still need buffing or cleaning.

What it works best on though, is plain old rusty steel. Exhaust manifolds and brake drums come out looking like they were just cast. The biggest problem is having a large enough tank to use. I'm thinking of putting an old bath tub to use for my next one.

Thanks Photon. Looks like we need a different presoak solution to get rid of the grease easily before it goes into the rust remover solution LOL

In 25+ years of cleaning parts, I have never heard of this....WOW.

How many 'cycles' can the batch be used for? does it have to be dumped and refreshed after each batch of parts, or does it keep for a while?
