It's very common for the receiver driers to require replacement so if you break the system you should get a new one before you pump down and refill. Definitely need a vacuum pump to remove all the water vapor. If you go 134 then you will have to change the oil and also some hoses may not be compatible. You (allegedly) have R12 so I'd use it. Assuming you have it. That's your story and you're stickin to it.

Trimmer, I appreciate the warning to all of us, but what judge is going to sign a warrant on a hobby guy? Sure, if he advertises he's selling it and selling in quantities to all comers, he's going to get scrutiny. Otherwise?

If there's a leak somewhere, a spray bottle with some dishing washing soap and water is your friend. Spray it on all joints, connections and seals. Just look for the bubbles. Evaporators probably the last thing to leak, since they live under the dash, but it's possible. Sometimes you can hear leaks if sneak up on them and be very very quiet.
