I've got a Carter 4966 that I'd like to richen up by changing the metering rods.

Symptoms are a sputtering idle and cruise, but foot into the throttle seems to get enough fuel. I already have mixture screws backed out quite a bit and played with the timing... no vacuum leaks etc.

This is a really mild 383.

It looks like the Carter number on these is 16-159. I assume these are the stock rods that came with the carburetor, and I have no idea what size they really are. I couldn't find any info online. Can anyone tell me what size these are, and or recommend a rod size over these? Thank you!

Edelbrock's are 2 step. Would need to change jets and the covers over to the flat type (stock are domed) to use.
The Carb Shop In Missouri has 3 step rods or can make them.

the edelbrock rods will work. the issue is the mopar specific tall primary jet. if you don't have the mopar jets then you'll need the edelbrock flat step-up piston cover. if you have the tall jets then use the "cupped" step-up piston cover. my bet is the idle jet is too lean, and needs to be richened.

Looks like you will likely need to go to a larger primary jet since the rod is .064 which is one of the smallest already.
I would recommend you try a .100 primary jet with something like a 0.0710 X 0.0470 rod.
Mine seemed to like a big jump between cruise and power step, but timing is everything.
