1969 RR Dash/Dash pad

If your not taking the dash out, here how I got the dash pad out. The cluster, heater controls, glovebox have to come out. I never lowered the steering column. Here are some pics of where some of the holes are. There are 3/8 speed nuts.
The next hole form the one near heater controls should be 10 inches and the next 7 1/2. This is the same both way's. Man what a pain in the butt. Then I got to put it back in !!!!!

Great info and pics, that clears up a lot. I guess I have to get a socket and extension to get to those. That sounds like a bitch of a job! Oh well, what I am learning is that it goes with the territory!

I asked your age because laying under the dash is no pic nic for an old guy !!

I have taken a pad out with the dash in place. Not easy. A 1/4 drive ratchet with a 6" extension is the tool to use. WEAR GLOVES !!

Lol yes, you are correct, it will not be a picnic for me. Luckily I have a friend who is helping that is small and can get his hands in a lot better than me. 1/4 drive and an extension, got it, thanks for that info! I'll have to pick up some gloves.

Well, I have to change the wiring harness without taking out the windshield, I have to bring the car to a restoration shop for that. So I'm left with taking apart the dash and doing the harness from underneath.

I got the glove box, ashtray, radio and instrument panel, the one with the lights. Does this come out before the lower dash pad or should I have left that in and then pull the lower dash panel with the switches in it? Anyway I pulled to hard and broke my dimmer switch, I suppose that will cost a bundle!

?? I thought the windshield was already out !!

No need to remove any of the stuff you're talking about to change the harness. There aren't enough connectors on the gauge cluster to bother pulling it out and the connectors on the switch panel cannot be interchanged. If you aren't pulling the windshield, just muddle away at it from underneath.

Crap, I already pulled the switch panel. Oh well, I get to buy a new dimmer switch now! lol Hmm I think I have to pull the lower dash panel because I need to get a new clear bezel for the instrument cluster, mine is cracked all around.

Yup. To get the cluster out you have to remove the lower pad.

Be careful here, this is where a weekend project becomes an unfinished nightmare and a future Craigslist candidate. The stuff you SHOULD fix becomes VERY apparent once a dash assembly is laying on the garage floor in front of you...Heater core, switches, speedos, tachs, bulbs, clips, harness stuff, wiper pivot seals, radio speakers, God forbid if you have A/C, dash pads, glove box, paint work, rust, pedal brackets and bushings, firewall seals and sound deadeners. Rebuilding the AMP gauge and cleaning the contacts on all the gauges is a must. The multi-pin connector will break all the factory pins if you rush, rebuilding the steering column is also a must....I could go on and on but the dash assy is where it all starts and ends for most project cars...

Well you can "not" change the harness, put up with the electrical gremlins and live with the chance something shorts and burns the car to the ground. Hopefully its not parked in your garage when that happens !!

Even with all my new harnesses installed in both my cars, I keep an old habit of unhooking the battery when parked in my shop....But I don't do that with my new Challenger parked right next to them.....It's the Challenger that I should worry about!! lol!

Its funny you should mention the garage burning down. This actually happened to me. I had a 1972 corvette I was doing work on and disconnected the fuel line. I didn't have the part I needed so I wanted to wait until the next day to get it. Well, the fumes from the disconnected fuel line leaked out and a refrigerator in the garage sparked an explosion! The garage blew up and burned down the house, we barley made it out! That's why I'm taking NO chances on anything burning down! This happened in 2008.

Remove a-pillar moldings.
Remove steering column.
Disconnect all harness on engine compartment side of bulkhead connector.
Squeeze clips and push bulkhead conn into pass compartment.
Remove kick panels.
Disconnect door switches, dome light. brake pedal switch, e-brake switch.
Loosen dash bracket bolts on either side.
Remove dash screws in windshield channel.
Tip dash back and remove (with help !!)
Now change the harness.
I just read this. I wanna do my dash over this fall/winter. Daunting task. Great advice/knowledge

Ah, its not as bad as it sounds. Of course the windshield has to be out to remove the dash. Take the front seats out so you have room to move. Take the steering column out so it doesn't have to dangle and be in the way. And its easier if one door is off so you can just heft the thing off the bolts and haul it out. Have something ready to set it on.
