Wondering how bad this front is going to be....

Anybody here besides me ever taken the NWS "weather spotter" courses? I've always found weather
mildly fascinating.
I recommend them to anyone interested in the weather. They don't cost anything and are quite
interesting.
I'm fairly decent at forecasting and I have a friend who is an actual meteorologist up
in DC who likes ribbing me and giving me pointers...

I haven't taken that course, but I have had lots of Aviation weather classes getting a Flight Dispatchers license, also 31 years flying experience to boot. I've always been fascinated by weather as well. Pretty easy to forecast with knowing a few basics.

How did you make out? Had gust's when it first hit 60mph+. Got called in early this morning to the hospital for this....

Did ok....just have some minor issues but nothing difficult. How bout you?

Took a meteorology class at a jr college back in 1970 but don't remember much about it now. Took that along with a flight theory class thinking I was going to go after a private pilot's license in the near future....

The front passed through here about 30 minutes ago and we faired well. Just a few limbs down and nothing close to the house or barn. I'm fixing to go the 6 miles to my building and check on the cars there. I hope all faired as well in the line of those storms. They are into Georgia now.

I was supposed to have a meeting tomorrow morning with a finance guy from Florida. He called a bit ago and said he was stranded at the Houston airport. Apparently storm related and many, many canceled flights.

I was quite concerned with Alabama folks on this one. It had some of the same earmarks as....
well, you no doubt remember.
We had a minor tornado and other reports of 80mph wind in the area, but these ridges protected us as always.

Getting very windy here now with rain on the way...

I feel for you guys facing a storm; cold weather, while unpleasant, is something we are used to and prepared for. Not sure how to prepare for flooding and tornadoes.
We just hit the dreaded minus forty, without wind.

We ended up with a lot of flooding around the area and in the end about 1/4 inch of ice.....

You try and live in a place that's on high ground to avoid being flooded. Wish I had known about that with my first house lol. Lived there 6 years before it got 7 1/2" of water...the first time. A month later it got 1" in it. 1" isn't bad but it still messes up the flooring etc. The 3rd time it was 3" and time to fix it and sell it. A buddy of mine still lives in the old hood and he said that my old place had waist deep water in it when Harvey came through. Been in my present house going on 36 years and so far so good but the dirty side of a wet cat 3+ hurricane might do the trick that is if there's anything left to get wet. Tornadoes.....well, you need a good alert system and someplace to shelter in but so far I've never seen a big twister go through around here in the 56+ years that I've live in the area but we do get a lot of the small ones like with the front that just went through. Never saw or even heard about a monster mile wide one go through here.

Funny that you mention mile wide tornadoes; I unwittingly experienced one.
Settle in, maybe get a coffee. It’s gonna be a long story.
Back in the ‘80’s I was living for a while in Edmonton, Alberta. I had a rather bizarre girlfriend, but I loved her.
Her and I are supposed to bar b q when she gets off of work, so I spend the afternoon preparing an awesome spread. It begins storming, hard, so I move inside while the stuff cooks in the carport. The phone rings. It’s my landlord. Says there is a tornado and he’s calling to see if the house is still standing. I assure him the house is fine, he’s wrong, there’s no tornado. The phone rings again, girlfriend calling to cancel date because of tornado. Hhmmm....
My buddy drops by, we eat the bar b q food and turn on the news. Huge tornado. Mile wide. Lotsa damage. It actually missed me by about a mile. Had I looked out the front window I would have seen it tear up the industrial area and kill many people. I missed the whole thing, and it missed me. Thirty something people killed. The next weekend girlfriend dumped me. Google Edmonton tornado, I was there.

Why did the GF dump you? Because of the tornado?

49*-51* F highs 33*-40* F lows, mostly clear & sunny :bananadance:
pretty much the same give or take a few degrees all week :carrot:

plenty cold, for my taste
& me not shoveling snow
or freezing pipes or any wind to speak of etc.
a plus

Even that innocent question results in another of my never ending stories...
I went out with this girl for a few months. Never could, ummm, seal the deal, so to speak.
Close, but never, ummm, all the way.
Several of my friends had taken me aside, unaware of each other, and said that they thought that my girlfriend played for the other team, if you know what I mean. I didn’t buy it, at least not then.
So the tornado happens, girlfriend cancels, buddy drops by. What the heck, let’s go to the bar.
We’re in the bar, and I guess I’m visibly down because my girl just cancelled after I made this great meal.
This vision of loveliness approaches me. Named Christine. Now this Christine was beautiful. Like light radiated from her gorgeousness. Model gorgeous. She is prepared to fix me like I’ve never been fixed before. “No” I say, “I have a girlfriend and I don’t mess around on her.”
The next time I see girlfriend she dumps me.
That was more then thirty years ago. To this day I still regret not letting Christine have her way with me. Truly one of the ones that got away.
I swear, one of these days I’ll have a short story. I promise.

We hit 68 degrees here today!
68 in Mass Hole!?
