Hi all - new guy here. I have a 1966 Belvedere, 838 4 speed. In March I invested and coughed up a lot of money and ordered the hemi overdrive from Passon. After two months, it finally arrived. After a couple of glitches with the spline and bearing housing, finally got it installed.
The gear ratios are excellent and the OD is awesome especially since I do a lot of highway cruising. Flowed through the gears smoothly everything was great until I downshifted to second. There is a very noticeable gear noise, almost like the noise these make when in reverse, more prevalent on deceleration in second gear, and can also feel a slight vibration in the shifter. May also do it in first but cannot really tell since you're going very slow at that point.
I called and left a message with Jamie yesterday but haven't yet heard back.
Any ideas/help appreciated. I hate the thought of pulling this thing out and shipping it back.
Thank you

First check your linkage alignment. I know you don’t want to hear this but pull the transmission and send it back to him on his dime so he can open it up and fix it. I’ve been hearing he had some problems with making the gears but that was last year.

Have you called Jamie? He is a good guy and I am certain will take care of it. Maybe it is something simple?

Original poster, you are talking about the Overdrive unit that Passion has been selling for many years and NOT the A-855 five speed, correct?

Thanks - this is the hemi overdrive a833 4 speed. I checked and re-checked the linkage. Right now I do have a call into him - yesterday - but have yet to hear back. If I have to, I will remove it - but all I have is four jack stands and my 58 year old body :).

I know how that is. I rebuilt my 18 spline 2 months ago and have to pull it out again.

Well still haven't heard back from Passon so maybe it will just smooth out and get quieter. I left him a detailed message yesterday. I'm hoping he stands behind his product. It was a lot of money.

I've dealt with Jamie. He is/was totally stand up with me. I'm sure he will make it right.

I'm sure you're right. There is a lot of positive information around forums and stuff. My experience thus far has been okay. I ordered the correct size bearing housing last week and it never came and no return call. I ended up sizing the one that came with the transmission at a machine shop. Now this issue. I am thinking that maybe he is out of town - that's why I haven't heard anything - thinking positive.

Update - I texted Jamie with the attached video and he got back to me saying it's fine. I may have downshifted at too high of speed - but he said it is fine so I am not going to worry!

Perhaps some free beer would entice some young man to assist you?

I have worked with Jamie Passon for a number of years. He has been a 100% stand up guy with me so I have no doubt he will stand by his transmission if there is a problem.

I agree with Jaimie. It sounds fine, at that speed and downshifting into second while not mashing the gas and just engine breaking it will make that sound. My buddy’s passion HEMI 5 speed does it too. And that trans puts in work on that car. It’s a work horse.

The video shows me downshifting approaching a stop, maybe > 20 mph

Doesn't sound right to me, especially being just the one gear. I know new trans can be noisy though, and I'm not a certified mechanic.
Curious, if you push down on the shifter in neutral, is there a noise or vibration?

Nope - no vibrations in neutral. I just took it for a drive, you can hear it with your foot on the clutch in second, but gets very noticeable when I let go of the clutch and decelerate - when slowing for a turn.
