My 1969 Bee has the rally gauge package and a column shift 727. The factory tach works fine, I'm just sort of wanting an aftermarket tach/shift light for that "day two" look. I prefer to mount the tach on the steering column, however, the biggest piece of the column is for the column shifter and rotates, so what's left is a small portion of shaft nearest the dash/gauge cluster (about a 1" space to dash, then about 2"+ to gauge cluster face); then there's the part of the column in front of the column shifter where the gear "identifier" is (should be able to mount here?).

I'm looking at this Autometer tach, and Autometer provides no measurements other than gauge diameter so I have no way of measuring for fitment. For those who have column shift 727s, have you mounted a tach on the column and if so, how? I prefer not to have it on the dash.

here's what I did - Autometer Traditional Chrome street tach, 2 5/8" diameter. IMO, anything larger than 3 3/8" would be obtrusive. My setup may not be relevant since it's a 4 speed so slightly different column collars but you get the idea. No shift light but if I were to have one, it would be somewhere other than attached to the tach.

I mounted my 5 inch monster tach on the column. I used a hose clamp. Doesn't obstruct anything. Fits in there nicely.

Tossing in a possible option/idea. My SW is smaller but it has a bracket that hangs it from between the cluster and dash.....

The sc bracket that bolts to the retainer ring is approx 1.5" wide and since you only have 1" will have to be cut down to fit. Could easily done.

Good luck

I'm more concerned about the actual tach measurements and how deep it is.

Could you use the Autometer tach clamp dimensions ? I have a spare that I could measure.

Good luck

Yea, that's what I was planning on using too, a hose clamp. But are you a manual or column shift 727? If manual, of course no issue since your entire column is unobstructed, unlike mine with the shifter taking up about >75% of the column.

Lee, I just went out and snapped a couple photos for you to give you another option to think about versus the column mounting of the tach.

We have very similar '69 Bees and mine had a Sun tach mounted like shown in the pics back in the early '70's when I got the car. I drove it for many years like this and liked the tach location just fine. Well, 35 years later in 2010 I decided to restore the Bee so the old Sun tach came off. Now a few weeks ago I finally got around to installing the new AutoMeter tach I bought for it after the resto. I had fully intended to mount it like you have described, but after several attempts to clamp it somehow to the column, I gave up, it wasn't working out well at all.

Went back to the way I had the Sun tach mounted back in the '70's, figured that it worked then, so it'll work now. Down side is two small metal screw holes drilled into the underside of the dash, but once installed, you never see them and I don't plan to ever remove it. Even if I did, you would have to get down on the seat and look up to be able to see the holes. Cable routing easily sneaks through the opening at the back of the heater control panel with no interference to get the wires under the dash for the connections. Takes just a slight eye movement to the right to check the tach when driving, and does not block view of any of the other gauges. Well, enough chit chat, time to take a look at the photos. Hope this helps you some.

I have a automatic on the column

I am in the same boat now as you were. I am in the Tach dilemma right now, If you could confirm, that is the rallye dash without the tach correct? Did you ever look into putting in the Tic-Toc Tach in place of the clock? just wondering if thats going to be a royal pain and I should just install an after market tach like you did..hmm. thanks

Gotta see if I can find a picture, but for my 67 Coronet (auto on the column) I machined a billet aluminum L shaped bracket that I used a hose clamp to attached to the stationary part of the column and it brought the tach out for clearance. Worked great.
