anyone use these style of trans / oil coolers vs. traditional tube n' fin style? i have one (18" OAL) someone gave to me to save space. Wondering if they suck, since i've not really seen them on older stuff.

good, bad, the same ? your 2 cents ?

If I was buying a trans cooler it would be like a radiator that cools the engine. Tanks on each end with tubes and heat sink fins. MO

This is what I run. 727 behind a 610 hp 496 stroker in 120+ degree summer. No issues. The heat sink style should only be used in addition to another, not stand alone.

The stacked plate style is the best, i also like the long double pass heat transfer "finned tube" style if combined with the radiator trans cooler ( I can already hear the debate on that one, lol), I put one in the space between the front bumper and the bottom tank of my Polara. The car was an old race car and was missing the front gravel pan that closes that gap and keeps the air going through the radiator so the finned tube worked out pretty well there. I already have a a/c condenser in front of the radiator so i didn't want to put anything else in front of the radiator. The second option would have been to put a stacked plate style with fan over the rear axle.

i do have fin/tub 8 row in front of the radiator now. if i can find a spot to mount this heat stink style i'd use it in addition to it.

I use a larger size "this" on my 66 493 with 9 1/2" converter. Been using it for 40 years now.

I used a tube/fin cooler by Perma-Cool as a power steering cooler. It was actually marketed as a transmission cooler. I thought about maybe mounting a second one on the passenger side of the radiator support as an additional transmission cooler.
