Not trying to be a whiner, just posting this to help other forum members if it applies.

Last year, squatting for periods of time painting a floor, my knee/lower right leg felt like it was going to sleep all the time as I finally stood up. This year, doing some similar light duties I found the same sensation, but it got worse until last week I could not put any weight on my right side because of knee pain. Pain killers and therapeutic topical gels seem(ed) to do very little (if anything) to help things along. I did not participate in any supervised rough sports as a youngster.

The source of the majority of pain (when prodding around with finger pressure) seems to be the "lateral collateral ligament" (I'm no anatomy expert). The immediate area around there is probably messed up to some degree as well. I walked around for a week or two with increasing pain and stiffness until recently when it was a little too much to bear. Now I've been off that foot/knee/leg for almost a week now.

Time to consult a professional. Found by researching treatment/diagnosis that x-ray's do not provide a direct view of soft material damage but evidently an MRI will. We will see what happens. I am now finding by constantly putting all my weight on the left side it is not doing that limb any favors, so the sooner this issue gets resolved, the better.

I feel your pain....literally! Last November I was on my knees painting the stair rail...as I went to get up my kneecap dislocated locking the other bones . That didn't hurt much....but I could not straighten my leg.....so as I slowly forced my leg straight the pain was immense.....then it popped back in....and the pain was mostly gone. Its happened about 30 times since then. I've had it looked at by a knee specialist and I've had an x-ray and they cant see much wrong. So next Monday I'm seeing a man who going to scan it whilst I deliberately dislocate it! He asked me if I minded doing it so he can actually see the inside of my knew to see what's happening as I do it. I said it wasn't top of my bucket list but if it helps to sort the issue then I'm game! I've kind of got used to the pain now as I know what to expect....but its viscous ....right up there with when my appendix ruptured!!!
But at least I'm not on crutches or in constant pain like you....so best of luck with getting it fixed.

I feel your pain. "sorta" I just spent 2 weeks at home I either strained or tore my bicep femoris. It was some of the worst leg pain I have ever had. I tried to be a cool guy and took my daughter up to the store so she could get mothers day gifts for my wife. By the time I got home and tried to get out of the car. I just stood there beside the car and had to get my daughter to help me back into the house. I, a grown *** man almost broke down in tears it was so much pain. The muscle goes from your *** cheek to the outer part of the knee. It took 2 full weeks for me to be able to put weight on it.

Funny this topic popped up when it did as I am experiencing a similar situation. A little back story...In the late 80's when I was flying a lot into the Indian Ocean supporting the Navy rotations from their fleet ships with personnel and supplies we would transit out of Messara. Oman. We flew what the called, Double Diego Garcia shuttles that originated out of the former Clark AB RP and would ferry out from Subic Bay RP. On this particular trip, we got to Messara and usually at around lunch time when we would hit the Brit Club there for lunch. This time it was closed. We were supporting the US Carl Vinson and the Navey offered to ferry the crew to the ship for lunch. Flew out on a Helo and got a tour of the boat and a fine lunch. After returning back to shore, we loaded up and took off out over the Indian Ocean. The AC radioed the Air Boss asking for permission for a high speed low level pass. Permission was granted and we start our pass screaming about 150 ft of the water. I was on the flight deck observing and after we left the port side of the ship, I started back down the ladder to the cargo box. As soon as my left foot touched the cargo box floor, BAM!!! The AC pulled on the yoke and began a Rapid *** Assent of which caused me to Hyper Extend my left knee. Fast forward to back at home station, I was having discomfort and some pain still in the knee and went to the Flight Surgeon for an evaluation. At the time, it was felt that I had torn my Meniscus but it was inconclusive. It eventually cleared up and never bothered me again until the 1st of this month. It reoccurred after spending about 1.5 hours on my knees planting my vegetables for the season. The next day I could hardly walk nor bend it without pain. Finally it calmed down enough to get an X-Ray which is a start but I agree Dibbons that an MRI is the next step. This just sucks big time because my mobility is limited and I have had to slow down which ain't my style. Guess those injuries in our younger years finally come back to haunt us. But damn!!! I don't mind getting older. It's just the damned aging and the vessel breaking down that really upsets me the most. Updates as I get more diagnosis...cr8crshr/Bill:usflag::usflag::usflag:

Had my left knee scoped 2 years back
Torn meniscus both sides.
One piece was folding over on itself and making the joint pop while walking.
Then it would go back in place only to repeat on another day.
Fixed mine orthoscopic , six little 3/8 to 1/2" cuts,
It took a few weeks to feel real good again.
After a week I was trucking around just fine.
So you know, scope job isnt to bad.

Got the feeling that that may be my situation. At least hoping so as the X-Ray read hasn't come back and what my next steps will be. Just really obnoxious pain and discomfort now for over 3 weeks...cr8crshr/Bill:usflag::usflag::usflag:

good luck & speedy recovery guys

I had knee issues when younger from
Baseball & Football, stretched tendons, knees going sideways etc.
knock on wood all good now

I even had a stick go thru & under part of my kneecap
when riding a motorcycle/dirtbike in Anchorage on July 4th
like 1984-ish, I was 25-ish
late like midnight, it was still light, like dusk light
playing around riding with a friend,
he took the low side I took the high side
on a banked turn with a series of whoopdeedoos...
I got bucked off the bike, back end stepped out really bad
& landed out in the muskeg in a bush, a stick got me
the adrenaline flowing didn't make me think it was bad as it was...
I got it out of that stinky *** muck & went on riding, for a couple hrs...

When we finally stopped it started hurting, throbbing
when I was changing clothes,
took off the riding boots to drive home
it was excruciating pain, blood all covered my sock into my right boot
I noticed the scare under my knee,
that was now all swelled up...
I figured no big deal, didn't know the stick actually penetrated either...
Thought it was just a scrape...

Went back to the house unloaded the bikes sat down for a few brews...
Went to bed a lil sore & when I woke up like 4:30 am,
my knee was killing me, really swelled up like the size of a football...
All infected...
I called my sister to get a ride & went to the ER
that's when I found out it went under my Patella...
They numbed me up
they had to get a brush & clean it out, with hydrogen peroxide etc.
all kinds of dirt & pus came out, freaken' gross...
I had to undergo a lil' procedure, they called 'clean it up'
on the area
It was 18 months before I was normal again...
Had to do physical therapy, learn how to walk,
or walk up & downstairs again, was like torture...
Even sitting or driving for a long time, my right knee would hurt
if it was in the same position too long, for years afterwards...

I aggravated it again later when doing tile work on my knees
even with really good kneepads on...

To this day getting on that knee, my full weight it's uncomfortable...
it's not really pain, it just doesn't feel good

I'm sure (or would think) medical procedures
& medicine is better today

yeah I can relate

Had the x-rays taken today and the doc said knee joint worn down to stage II (stage IV is the worst). The other/good knee is stage I. A minor invasive scraping procedure was recommended. First article I read online regarding this procedure recommended against such surgery, with the justification that "studies" show no benefit over physical therapy alone in the long run.

I had already signed up for a month of physical therapy anyway, so I guess I have the rest of my life to decide whether to pursue any other more radical procedures on the knee. It's too bad the doctor's recommendation did not have more universal support (although thousands of this things are still being performed every year).
