440 rattle/knocking sound

help:
1968 motor rebuilt 30 over but that was 20+years ago. motor has 17K been running it the last two years. all seems good. did a beat run, tack it up a bit 92ish mph in low2 of my 727 not sure the RPM's. came home ok. next day started it and clacking /knocking sound from pass side, gets quieter as it warms up. thought lifter, ended replacing all 8 on that side. no change, changed fuel pump no change. if i quick rev it, it knocks when going down at idle then quieter.. running 20/50 Castrol like i always have. don't seem to hear any low end noise, seem on top. thanks for reading..

I agree to check flex plate, but did you put in 8 new lifters on an old broke in camshaft ?
I don’t know if that is a good idea but I am no expert so maybe see what others think.
Unless you meant rocker arms or push rods.

Some people get me, throwing new parts at an unknown problem. New lifters on a broke in cam! Find the problem!!! Another thing 92ish in second gear, I don't care what the rearend ratio is, you have over revved the engine. More than likely bent a pushrod or more. Look, listen, inspect until you have located the problem. Take apart carefully with a full inspection of each part. Verify defect, then a new part or parts. New lifters, needs a full break in or you will cause more problems. Just my opinion, maybe because I'm tight and don't want to buy something unless it's bad. Please use some common sense unless you want to build your engine again. 17K miles is nothing unless you rev it to 90+ in L2 everytime out. Buy a tachometer. I apologize if this is to blunt, but just the way I feel about this.
 
I agree with @Jerry Hall Even with 3.23:1 "highway" gears, you would be over 7000 RPM at 92MPH. Not a smart move with any V8 engine, especially one that hadn't run in 2 years.

Not exactly. I've been 113 mph with my 3.23s in second at less than 7000. He was probably about 5500 or so.

Okay, well thank you for correcting me. I have never had a big block with highway gears. Either way, an engine that hasn't run in 2 years, probably shouldn't be tapping at the redline.

The A-727 uses a paper fluid filter and has two transmission bands, one for reverse, and the other is a kickdown band. All shift ratios were 2.54:1 for first gear, 1.45:1 for second gear and 1.0:1 for third gear. Reverse gear is 2.21:1.
Do the math for your tire size and final gear ratio.

Jerry suffers from Dyslexia.... 1st gear is actually 2.45....:lol:

would a bearing quiet down when the engine get to normal temp?

the car has not been sitting, been driving it a bit the last two years.
the over rev was not intentional, dropped to low 2 and held it to long. 3:23 rear gears. 295/50/15 on the rear
heat riser is ok
it sounded like a lazy lifter to me, but i'm just a back-yard mechanic. original lifters are labeled as to where they cam out.
i rolled all 8 push rods from the right (pass) side an they looked good
i measured the fuel pump push rod 3 1/4 long and looks new
i'll check the flex plate and torque converter next
