One of the interesting things about the XB-70 was its efficiency. While most bombers cruise economically at subsonic speeds and then 'dash' over the target and quickly retreat, the Valkyrie was meant to complete the entire flight mission at over Mach 3.

Mach 3.08 was the official top speed as tested, but further testing was curtailed when the better built #2 prototype crashed. But it was found that while top speed used twice as much fuel as subsonic cruise, the aircraft was flying four times faster, and so used less fuel per distance traveled.

The wingtips folded down at high speed, riding the shock-wave coming from the engine inlets to gain lift. They also added stability while flying.

A clever guy in NZ, made a race car, and used a Lycoming engine. Kiwi will know about it. There is also info on line.

Although it flew, production was cancelled due to the availability of other Allied aircraft.
