If I shift to neutral and let the trans pump run, the car moves fine, but if I leave it in park while I warm up the engine, the car wont move until I rev it up a bit. After the transmission warms up, it's fine the rest of the day.

Converter drain back. Fairly common.
Start it and warm it up in neutral. Problem solved.
Seriously, I did mention that already. Problem not solved, but thanks.
If you get better results in neutral there's no need to warm it up in park.
Problem IS solved. That's just the way it works. Or put an anti drain back in it

Fairly common thing to happen. Convertor drains fluid back into the tranny. Warm up in neutral or get an anti drain back as mentioned above
Transgo makes a different manual valve that allows the converter to fill in park position.

Can one assume that if these cars were used daily, like years back when they were "just" cars, that this wouldn't happen?

Normally the more you run them you don't notice it. I have a 2003 Dakota that does it periodically.
True, but the hydraulic circuit route is different in park.

What's nice about a pushbutton transmission is when you place it in park it automatically goes into neutral.

My wagon does that too. When I light it off, I put it in neutral and let it run for a bit before dropping into drive. My 94 1500 did that too after sitting for a few days. Even with the check valve.

Yes, but the pressure goes from 5psi in Park to 55psi in Neutral. That's why you check fluid in Neutral, when it's actually being pumped.
