Timing retard - Why

I think it is a bad idea putting rubber tube inside the engine. It is subjected to a lot of heat & oil, & both are likely to soften it & defeat the original purpose.

The bronze gear in my racecar has been in use since 2013. Over 1100 passes.

Geoff 2:

With a big block, the drive rides upward due to the counter clockwise rotation of the the helix. Riding upward retards the timing. A small block rotates clockwise so it drives downward. There is a cam button installed. There is no taper on roller cam lobes. So there is no reason for anything to flex forward or rearward.

So give or take possible 300 hours of run time. That about ten months of drive time for most people. Plus your running in a more service controlled environment I hope. Using the right oils with bronze or brass is a plus. Most will just have any cheap crap oil installed unlike your race car.

I use a nylon tube over the shaft, and don’t for get to put a drop of oil or light grease on the weights in side of the dist so they move freely helps keep timing steady

On a big block if using a stock timing chain cover the cover can flex so the cam can still move in spite of the button.... A shim between the timing cover & the water pump housing eliminates that issue..

Yup^^^^, that is what I did. Shim/spacer siliconed in place so that it could not move.

I took the front of the engine apart this weekend, the cam button was in place. I will measure for a shim between the timing cover and water pump and see if that helps.

Over the weekend, I shimmed the front of the timing cover. This seems to have solved the problem.
